vivaldi Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 yellowtulip what is your research field in physics ?
yellowtulip Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 (edited) Apparently I'm arrogant... so it's certainly nothing to do with string theory ... I suppose you can call me one of those experimental sorts! Edited March 31, 2012 by yellowtulip
vivaldi Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Einstein broke our comprehension of physics without any experiment ! I believe the string theory will end up doing the same thing. It's really a pity that you are arrogant so your won't leave your fingerprint on the humanity history through such an incredible theory. You should be working on optics then, exposing yourself to different lights.
yellowtulip Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Feel free to think what you'd like. While you seem to have an objection to experiment, I think theory and experiment go hand in hand. While a theorist might come up with an incredible theory... take string theory example... as you asked me before... "Do I believe in string theory?", as though it is some mysterious unprovable entity. Oh wait.... maybe it can be proven... but I think some experiments might be required for that! Anyway, IMHO, experiments are guided by theory, and theory is guided by experiments, so really, I'd say, one isn't of any use without the other. Theories are awesome, but discoveries are pretty sweet too. I certainly have no objections to those string theorists out there. Maybe I'm just naive Wow... is this really getting off topic!
vivaldi Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Well, I'd say physics experiments are usually guided by observations and not theory. Maybe it's the new fashion now to introduce theories to physics and then try to find the observation that obeys to those theories. The fundamentals of physics are generated by observation , then experiments, then we simply try to figure out the law that generated that observation ( an observation can be reproduced through experiment). I believe it's usually at the end that we define the theory, that might become a theorem. On the other hand, I'd say it's rather the mathematics the other way around. They are governed by theories, and might go to observation/experiements world when we apply it. And finally to excerice my dictatorship ( being arrogant) , yes you're right, I can I think what I like, but you have to think what I think ! Otherwise you wouldn't win NSERC award ! lol
yellowtulip Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Lol... I guess we'll just have to wait and see about that I wish you the best!!
Bubu Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 I have contacted few people, they told me that the Banting courier will only notify applicants by post. hey faming which university did u apply with
jnoel12 Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 I've been away at a conference all week, and I almost forgot about the anxiety. Now that I'm heading back, I can feel it building again... I suspect that I won't have a letter waiting for me when I come home (to Montréal). Maybe early next week? Am I right?
marmoor Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Any news from NSERC this morning ? )) yes somebody knocked at my door this morning handed my award letter and apologized for the delay.

eliasg Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Just to get an idea, what is the success rate in your universities for NSERC ?
stud007 Posted March 31, 2012 Posted March 31, 2012 Around 50% in UofA ...Also, our NSERC quota is the third highest in Canada after UofT and UBC! ktel 1

stud007 Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 oops! just realized that univ of waterloo as well have a fractional more numbers than uofa for nserc.

I'm afraid that for such a slip up, you must give up either your bond status, or your stud status

eliasg Posted April 1, 2012 Posted April 1, 2012 Vivaldi, i think you are the first here to receive the mail tomorrow ? Do you know exactly when the factor passes ?
