PurpleBrain Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 hey everyone! i applied for the soros fellowship for new americans. i submitted my application about 2 weeks ago. (deadline is nov 1). has anyone else applied? perhaps we can wait it out together. any past winners here? looking forward to hearing from some of you.
tweety11226 Posted November 18, 2011 Posted November 18, 2011 I will like to apply for this scholarship in the next few years . So, I can wait it out with you just to see how the application process goes . If you don't mind me asking what exactly are your stats such as any prestigious fellowships or anything. Good Luck
obot Posted November 29, 2011 Posted November 29, 2011 I applied on the deadline. Haven't heard anything yet.
PurpleBrain Posted December 8, 2011 Author Posted December 8, 2011 I haven't heard anything yet either...
tk20 Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Their website says that they "will send notification to those who are and are not finalists on or about January 6 2012." That's a lot later than the formerly advertised mid to late December notification period
obot Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 That's annoying. Thanks for letting us know, tk20.
valentinovka Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Does anyone know of anyone who's gotten an invitation to interview yet? I worry that "by Jan 6" means that's when the rejections come out (assuming accepts come in earlier).... Also, are there any other forums talking about this fellowship? Thank you all!
piquant777 Posted December 31, 2011 Posted December 31, 2011 Share in the anxiety -- I don't know of any forums and there seems to be very little information about what is happening. I would take their notice at face-value though and assume that the decision (either + or -) is not going to come out until the new year. Maybe the delay is a result of a huge boom in applications...? :-/ This fellowship app was a very intense amount of work, but I think even the best of candidates understand it is a total crapshoot. I applied in parallel with the grad school app process without being first admitted to schools, so that alone might be a big factor against me?
PurpleBrain Posted January 5, 2012 Author Posted January 5, 2012 has anyone heard anything? i checked my mail yesterday and still nothing. EEK!
piquant777 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 still nothing here...though today is supposed to be the day? do they call or email or snail mail, does anyone know?
tk20 Posted January 6, 2012 Posted January 6, 2012 I heard from past forums that they snail mail the denied, and call the semi-finalists.
valentinovka Posted January 7, 2012 Posted January 7, 2012 I haven't heard anything either but have been out of the country so I wouldn't even get the snail mail/call until I am back. I was hoping there would be an email...If any of you find out the answer (yes/no), please post! Good luck to everyone!
diogenes53 Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 My letter arrived. Rejected. That is all. Good luck.
chokoreeto Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Diogenes53, what part of the country do you live in? Has anyone heard of anyone getting an interview?
chokoreeto Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 Got it. I'm in a similar place. Not sure where my letter is though.
gradcafe222 Posted January 9, 2012 Posted January 9, 2012 any body heard anything? received a phone call? snail mail? NOTHING over here
piquant777 Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I haven't received anything, but have also been traveling. I wish they would e-mail instead of calling/snail mail.
chokoreeto Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 Oh no, the website says that updates were sent on January 4 and that all finalists have been notified. Totally confusing, since I live in the New York Metro Area and haven't received anything.
obot Posted January 15, 2012 Posted January 15, 2012 Sounds like none of us got to the finalists round.
hotyel Posted May 4, 2013 Posted May 4, 2013 Hi Guys, what did you write about in your essays? I was just recently told that the reason I was rejected is because I did not use "I" in my essays. I wrote about immigrant experience and how its linked to activities that contribute to the society. So, was I wrong? was I supposed to talk about my own experience???? PLEASE explain...
