medianerd
I thought that's what the media is for? Well, it certainly helps
Lizzle
Hey guys, At leave you haven't devolved into neighborhood cat woman status! Seriously, after I was unceremoniously dismissed from my job (kind of a relief), I went into deep despair and have now followed it up with an obsession with stray cats and - yes - power foods. My days shall now consist of cooing at the lost, scared animals and giving them yummy treats while I down bowls of quinoa and sprinkle wheat germ on god knows what. I'm trying to channel my inner "Amelie" - convinced I can both distract myself by doing good for others and (ahem) gather up some good karma points It's a total farce, but is making me feel a bit better in the mean time. As I may have mentioned, my previous approach (read: vodka) didn't have such a positive effect...Besides, I'm accustomed to social service work and I have no idea what to do with my empathy/caregiving instincts/nosiness when left to my own devices. Extending positive vibes across the #$%&@!^ addictive/destructive web site... Here's hoping for some news in the next few days, people!
j__4_g
Thank you so much for the update on the notifications page. I am so confused because I was just told by the department that we wouldn't find out until the end of next month. I don't know what to think now, other than that I am officially terrified to check my e-mail on monday. Deep breaths. I applied for WashU as well. I won't really care if I don't get an offer, but it's a great program for my SO. So, just to clarify, you've been in touch with people there and you were told not until the end of March? Did you have any kind of interview? (My adviser is a WashU alum and she says typically they fly people in -- but she could be incorrect/this could have changed). If you could provide any more information about what you heard (if you've in fact heard anything more), I'd greatly appreciate it -- neither of us have had any sort of rejection e-mail at this juncture, either. Burritos for everyone! Quick question - do you guys have any info on Northwestern? I saw someone on the "Results" past wrote that they just returned from interview weekend. I applied there out of a combo of laziness and commitment to my SO (we live in Chi), but it's a bad match for me and I won't be too upset/surprised if it doesn't pan out. That said, I'm still curious! That was me who posted that on the results board. I was just there for an interview last weekend, there were 12 of us in the potential cohort, total. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news .
Lizzle
Thanks for the info on Northwestern and, of course, good luck with it! I'm rather relieved, since my SO pressured me into applying and I wasn't too keen on it (again, bad match except geographically). Any news on UNC? Dubya
Whoever mentioned being really nervous because they knew that they were being judged at that very moment...yeah...I know how you feel now!!!
Dubya
Also, anybody want to confess to posting the 3 most recent acceptances (Oregon, Leipzig, and Michigan) in Bio. Anth.?
Fritzie
It's another one of those days... got a telemarketing call from the same area code as one of my schools while I was in class, was about ready to pass out before I got out and could check voicemail: "Congratulations, (YIPPEE!) you're eligible to enter for a chance to win... (&*^%@#*&^*$*@^#%$#!)" My sanity is a fragile, fragile thing right now.............
medianerd
My sanity is also very very fragile right now, and I HATE when I am able to check my email after a long interval and there's nothing here. Sigh. Still have managed not to look at Results Search since yesterday but my resolve is waning. I want to sleep for a week
Dubya
My confidence was once sky high. Now...I'm a wreck. I keep asking myself why I applied to some programs that take so few people that I have no realistic shot. Unfortunately, the programs that are the best fit take the fewest people...my safeties are not a good fit. I'm screwed!
medianerd
I'm starting to wonder if 9 schools out there remember I exist. I didn't get -any- mail today, which was weird. Well, not for Chicago, I suppose.
miratrix
I definitely feel like the clock is ticking - I got my March work schedule today, so the window for asking for days off and going on visits that month has ended. My fingers are crossed to get into the two far away schools and also manage to visit within the small window of the first week of April.
SlothOfDoom
Does anybody have the inside scoop on when UCLA will be notifying (PhD)? The only result on the boards is an unofficial rejection. It's the one school I might choose over the places I've been accepted (nice to stay close to friends and family!). Cheers!
medianerd
I am averaging 5 minutes between hitting 'check' on my email. Check. Check. I cannot believe 9 schools have told me nothing yet. Still no looking at the results search though!
I_heart_fieldwork
J_4_G - Well if they offer you an acceptance and you turn it down... feel free to put in a good word for me I really want to go there. My advisor went there and I have a couple other contacts that are either there or are alums. This is all my intel= During January they did all the first cuts as a department, starting Feb 1st they were sent out to the faculty and they are narrowing them down individually (My potential advisor has already sent out rejections to some other applicants i am friends with). The secretary told me that we'll hear by the end of march, but more likely AT the end of march. I was also told that they don't do fly in interviews (by an alumni- I think she's reliable), they just decide. So... hopefully at least half of that is reliable. At least we haven't been rejected yet!! Good Luck!
j__4_g
Thanks, I_heart_fieldwork....hmmm, this is turning out to be very interesting. I guess there is the possibility that my advisor was wrong or misunderstood... After I got my interviews @ Emory & Northwestern, she called a colleague of hers and was under the impression that interviews had already happened (her friend's students had "talked to potential students" apparently, but I am wondering if there was a breakdown in communication...). HOWEVER, I would think that this would be definitely something the secretary would have told you when you made contact...I will encourage my S.O. to send an e-mail to her potential advisor and see what's up so we can compare notes...maybe my advisor is confused between flying in for an interview and just flying you in to show you the program or something? I'll see what I can find out and post an update...for your and my SO's sanity! This also makes sense with others getting rejections and us not -- the pattern of operation, anyway. I'll let you know what I find out! I might shoot some e-mails to a few people there, too.
I_heart_fieldwork
j__4_g - Great! Good luck and fill me in! p.s. If you don't mind me asking... what are you and your SO's subfields?
j__4_g
we both applied to cultural -- medical anthro, specifically. when i was in correspondence with a potential advisor he mentioned I believe something like...3 per subfield typically admitted. i sent off an e-mail and i'll let you know what i find out...hopefully tomorrow take care & good luck! anthro2009
Hi everyone, I'm the one who posted the Oregon/Leipzig/Michigan acceptances on the results search thing... I posted them here too a little while ago but didn't realize the results search existed until yesterday. Still waiting on Harvard and Yale. Anyone else? But, I am in the sociocultural group. If I remember correctly, both programs had January deadlines. Does anyone know when they usually notify? Has anyone heard anything? philoanthro
Hi Everyone, I don't know about Harvard and Yale, but Penn sent me an email stating that they will send out notifications by March 15th. Lizzle
No, MedianerdLiz! Buck up. It's sunny-ish and almost warm in Chicago, and that's reason to celebrate. Go drink some tea. Do some yoga. Try to wrangle up a discount pass for some calming acupuncture, have a margarita, watch the Cosby Show - anything that helps. This sucks and we're waiting helplessly, but we all signed up for this torture and have got to keep our spirits up as much as possible. Besides, we're nearing the home stretch...Ish. Now get happy before you make me return to my gig last week as a woeful adolescent - and that's an order
medianerd
Well, I just found out that people have been notified at ....3 of my schools? And if I haven't heard I am declined... and I know people who have gotten into those places and I feel like I'm having an out of body experience I'm so upset. One of them was a poor fit, the other was seemingly perfect. Argh.... My mind is reeling.
