honkycat1 Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 and what are pros and cons for them? I think the most common is obviously powerpoint, although I think mac has its own standalone software for presentations (not a mac person). I've also seen a lot of people turn powerpoints into pdfs, is this to make sure it can run on any platform? I don't see too many merits of changing powerpoints to pdfs for other reasons. there is also Prezi, which is pretty cool but its a webapp and it obv doesn't have as many features as powerpoint. finally, I've had professors that just scroll down a google doc in his lecture but obviously not in a formal lecture. I personally have used them all, prezi is more work but its fun to play with.
ktel Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Yeah I turn powerpoints into pdfs so there are no issues with software or anything like that. There are Windows, Mac and Linux computers here so it's easier to just convert it to pdf. I use powerpoint to make presentations. Sigaba 1
robot_hamster Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 I just use Power Point. It is installed on all the computers at school so there's no worrying that the presentation wouldn't work. It's supposed to convert between mac and pc, but sometimes there are problems with things like images showing up. Power Point is easy to use and can do some fairly sophisticated things. We were playing with Power Point for one class where we had to "tell the story" without using words. We used the animation functions and some of the presentations turned out pretty cool.
Xanthan Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 I use Libre Office Impress (an open source version of Powerpoint). Some people say they've had trouble converting between it and Powerpoint, but I suspect they were using older versions of Impress. (And note that it default saves as .odf, so you have to save as .ppt.) More importantly, I just bring my laptop with me. Many (most?) projectors have HDMI in, so I just bring an HDMI cable. Saves any worry about format issues--projects my machine, WYSISYG.
Ennue Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 So far I have been using Powerpoint, but I know I will need to start using Latex soon (with Beamer I guess). That way I'll be able to write equations 'easily'
Genomic Repairman Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 Keynote baby! Love it and you can easily export to ppt when you have to use it.
