harrypotter
Hi, Can someone share his/her experience of writing new GRE? What is the difficulty level of new GRE verbal portion? I can see lots of folks getting scores in the range if 155-165 for verbal. I wonder whether the new GRE still has those complex vocab. words or whether it has questions which got to do more with the usage of commonly used words. Also, I have heard that comprehension is the toughest of the lot !! Please share your experience. Regards Harry
starstuff
The new GRE Verbal Reasoning section focuses on more commonly used words, and on using the words in context (ie: in a sentence, rather than in isolated analogies). Some questions on the new GRE have a different answer format, asking you to select multiple answer choices. In reading comprehension, you might have to identify which statements about a passage are true, and it can be a bit tricky determining whether the answer is just "b", "b and c", "b, c, and e", etc. etc; it is a lot more difficult to guess when there are 120 different answer combinations for each question. The ETS free practice guide is definitely worth doing to get used to the new question and answer types. For what it's worth, I have taken both the old and new GRE, and scored exactly the same on the verbal sections (740 old, 169 new, which are equivalent according to the concordance table). Kitkat
I would add to what Starstuff in saying that part of the reason (I think) that they are using more common words is so that they can see if you know less well known definitions of those words. As for how common the words they use I would have to say this. They are more common then they were on the old test but not as common as most words that we use on a daily basis. It is easier I think on the new test because, like it has been said, you get it in context, so you can use that to help you on the test.

neeravbm
Hi guys, I took GRE some time back and vocabulary was the most difficult part for me. From the standard list of words, there were a lot I remembered but a few which I could never remember. I searched for a website which could test me on the words I did not know more frequently than the words I knew. I couldn't find such a website. Then I decided to create one. And now I have: GRE Vocabulary. Based on your right and wrong answers, it identifies your strong and weak words and will ask you YOUR weak words more frequently. The website is absolutely free to use and does not have advertisements to distract you. I am not making any money out of this. My goal is to just make it easier for everyone else to learn these words. One thing I will definitely appreciate is feedback. If this method proves helpful, I will extend it to cover quant as well. Please feel free to contact me via the above website or email me at neeravbm@yahoo.com. Thank you. Regards, Neerav Mehta. www.vocabularygre.com sareth
