Grind12 Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Okay, until this point I've been kind of a lurker, just reading most of the posts and advice, which was great. Thanks guys. I've recently submitted all 8 of my applications and all I feel is excitement. I am eager to see if I was accepted to any of my programs which is bad because I won't hear from them until March and April 2012. The admissions committees probably haven't even started to review applications. I think I've submitted applications that represent me well and show my promise. I have about 3-4 months to go. How can I distract myself when I want this sooo bad?!
gellert Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I'm wondering the same damn thing. I recommend taking up a new hobby, or reigniting an old one. Personally, I'm planning to fill the next couple of months with work on a new paper and trying to finish writing this novel. Only time will show if the distraction proves sufficient; for now, I'm still checking my email compulsively!
Astarabadi Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Hey, just relax, take a deep breath and wait it out. You know you probably did your best, and don't beat yourself up over the smallest typos or other small mistakes that you did. It seems this year there is more competition (at least, as far as I've heard, in the humanities)....so that will make for an interesting result. I say let the frequent or seldom anxiety about your application hit you, so that you go back and keep checking if you submitted everything even after the deadline is past...and enjoy the ride till Spring time!
DoggieMom Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 Since I submitted all my apps, have completely lost the desire to work on my MA thesis revision. I just want to hear one "yes", so this won't matter anymore.
especially Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I haven't yet gotten mine in yet, but I intend to go whole horse on next semester's courses and try to get excellent grades in all of them. I also might work on simplifying/decluttering my home in case of a move for grad school (!). I imagine it's much tougher for those who don't have courses next semester or are finished their degrees already.
WalterBenjamin Posted December 19, 2011 Posted December 19, 2011 I'm a artist, although I am not pursuing it as a full time career. I am going to put together a show and pitch it to a few galleries to keep myself busy. Nothing keeps me more preoccupied than working on a show. Just working on something won't keep me out of neurosis. I need a goal!
coffeeplease Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 I'm taking up running (doing Couch to 5k, as I am a total couch potato) and am going to try to learn to knit. It's hard not to obsess over the waiting, so I'm eager to hear more ideas. cacao to cacao 1
Khayzuran Posted December 29, 2011 Posted December 29, 2011 Ditto with reigniting an old hobby to keep oneself busy, and also try to make the most of the free time left (won't be much after school begins!). I'm going with novel writing here, but picking up an instrument, compose some pieces, paint, poetry, knit, just creating some things.
jldstudio Posted December 30, 2011 Posted December 30, 2011 I think I'm going to go through a ton of books, make art, and try to exercise more. Do some fun things!
swirled Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 I am a single mom with a full time job and I still find myself obsessively thinking about the ad committees. I'm not sure that a hobby will suffice to keep my anxiety down and my mind still. Well, maybe meditation ..
ChasingMavericks Posted January 5, 2012 Posted January 5, 2012 Trying so hard not to obsess! It doesn't help that for whatever reason my code isn't working to check on my application processing at SCSU...they are seriously causing anxiety haha Applied: The New School in New York Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven Hope to hear from at least one of these by February 1st before I have to apply to other schools as well. There are my top two!
