  1. I applied for housing in the dorms but have not heard a peep. Anyone else has this problem?
  2. I thought most of the dorms are singles? Does that mean you get your own bathroom?
  3. Are the old GC supposed to be nicer than the new one? From the floor plans it looked like the old GC rooms were smaller (10 by 10). I also couldn't find pictures of what the rooms look like - if anyone has some please do share!
  4. Which programs have already sent out rejections, if you don't mind sharing?
  5. Is this week going to be *the week* for decisions? :-/
  6. I think it's the earlier Or people just aren't posting results this year...?
  7. Congrats to whomever got into Stanford. Wondering what subfield?
  8. Anyone applying for the Islamic studies subfield?
  9. Does anyone know if you can rent apartments (whether Harvard's or outside) for just the academic year (September to May/June)? I'm probably going to be abroad in the summer so I don't really want to be in a year-long contract. I'm also considering the GSAS dorms but I'd rather not live in a dorm as a postgrad .
  10. Thanks and best of luck to you bounban! I am American and lives nearby. International mail could take a while, and snail mail is all I got from them.
  11. I'm actually a masters candidate. I didn't get involved with NELC stuff until later in college, and I wanted to get more training in language as well as complete a thesis, before I give my best shot at a PhD later on. So I'm eyeing schools like Georgetown, NYU, and a couple of Ivy reaches.
  12. I kept hearing that Columbia doesn't like contemporaries. But look at their professor bios - almost all of them do post-colonial work (seems like Palestine is a hot topic), and almost no one does ancient. So ...?
  13. For leisure, I'm reading David McCullough's "The Greater Journey: Americans in Paris". I like his popular take on social history and ability to make periods interesting for the period's amateurs through anecdotes. Goodreads is amazing! Now I won't ever forget books I've always wanted to read, though a drawback is I doubt I can get through my reading list in one lifetime.
  14. I also would have assumed the Near East (along with East Asian) studies would be the most popular of the area studies, so the fact there is no peep at all is disquieting. It is sad, since I found the threads from last year immensely helpful. The fact there might be hordes of competition makes me nervous. My interests are in the modern Middle East, especially in the social sciences approach to post-colonial historical developments in North Africa. I also have a fascination with Islamic sciences and social history of the Abbasid caliphate, though it's mostly reading for leisure as I don't really see myself cut out as a historian. The job prospects of being a niche academic worries me. Anyways, glad to see other souls in the NELC area!
  15. Another applicant though leaning more on modern era. Also baffled by the lack of activities this season.
  16. Ditto with reigniting an old hobby to keep oneself busy, and also try to make the most of the free time left (won't be much after school begins!). I'm going with novel writing here, but picking up an instrument, compose some pieces, paint, poetry, knit, just creating some things.
  17. I thought the Penn FLAS website said the due date is in March 2012? Penn's FLAS was particularly confusing; I couldn't tell whether the app is with the admissions app or separate. And their coordinator hasn't emailed me back with answers, even though other schools' staff have been super quick at responding to questions.
  18. Hi all, If the application asks for your major GPA, is it okay to put your minor's GPA if it is going to be the graduate field you are pursuing (rather than your actual major GPA, which for me isn't quite related to my future grad work)? It's such a simple question but I'm not sure how to interpret it... Thanks.
  19. Sort of. I'm still undecided whether to approach from a history/humanities or social science angle, so just applying for masters.
  20. Hi all, Chicago's Center for Middle East studies offers a MA "through" either the Social Sciences division or the Humanities division. I was wondering whether having it through the Social Sciences division equals being a student of the MAPSS school with an area study focus, thereby being stuck with the so-called cashcow department of Chicago? Is anyone familiar with how the U of Chicago departments/schools are organized in this matter? Thanks.
  21. Great book! Though I think books 2 and 3 went downhill.
