TexasGuy Posted January 22, 2012 Posted January 22, 2012 They all know me fairly well but just so they really understand my future goals and reasons for applying to grad school?
TexasGuy Posted January 23, 2012 Author Posted January 23, 2012 long answer? lol I just want them to read through it (if they feel like it) to get to know me a lot more..
stackoverflow Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I don't see how this could possibly be a bad idea. If your SoP is strong, it might motivate your recommenders to write you a stronger letter, and can maybe explain to them further why you are passionate for the field. They might also give you some input on it.
emmm Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 I shared my SOP with all my letter writers. Only one got the final, just-about-ready-to-be sent version, however. The other two got works in progress, and one writer found the version she got confusing (it was awful - I posted elsewhere about how I bascially listed reasons why I should be rejected). The other recommender was instrumental in getting the final version to where it needed to be. I don't think sending the 2nd recommender the "bad" SOP hurt, but it was a bit awkward.
psychgurl Posted January 23, 2012 Posted January 23, 2012 Definitely give them your SOP (even if it isn't finalized). It is also helpful to give them your unofficial transcript, any classes you took with them/grades received, projects you worked on if you were in their lab, and any emphases you want to be made for various programs. If there are any holes in your application, rec writers could also address them.
