  1. Thank you all so much! I visited Bethlehem shortly after posting this and decided to live in the downtown area of North Bethlehem. I really like the area and can't wait to move in
  2. Great, thanks for the info! I'm looking into living in North Bethlehem, hopefully to get away from the undergrad feel of the area directly surrounding the school. I have a car so travel won't be a problem. Is that area generally pretty safe?
  3. Anyone else attending Lehigh in the Fall? I haven't committed yet but I'm pretty sure I'll be there.
  4. I'll most likely be going to Lehigh in the fall and would love to know anything that anyone knows about the area, especially anything to do with places to live, approx rent, places to avoid, etc.! There are a couple topics on it already, but they are generally outdated (3-4 years old).
  5. I have absolutely no accepts, only 3 rejections. Still waiting on 7 schools and have not been asked to interview at any of them. Am I pretty much screwed? I don't really understand what happened with my applications, people in my classes at my home institution have gotten into the same schools I've applied to with (much) worse credentials. I'm a little shocked, honestly.
  6. still waiting on 8 schools, already got rejections from two. the fact that I haven't even heard about interviews yet scares me.
  7. Who has heard back from Columbia? I'm wondering what it means if you didn't receive a rejection today, since I know a couple went out to various people.
  8. I figured this might be a good thread to start considering the success of last year's. So, where has everyone been admitted?
  9. Can anyone who has been accepted to UW - Seattle let us know under what research interest they've been accepted? I'm curious to know which lab has started admitting students.
  10. I don't see how this could possibly be a bad idea. If your SoP is strong, it might motivate your recommenders to write you a stronger letter, and can maybe explain to them further why you are passionate for the field. They might also give you some input on it.
  11. About half my schools wanted hard copies, and the other half were extremely adamant about NOT sending them anything by mail, so everyone should make sure that they check with the specific school first.
  12. I have a similar grade progression as you do, and honestly, I think it's almost saying more about you that you have gotten to the point where you can achieve solid A's for your last two years (I'm assuming that you have done this, of course, based on your treatment of your B/C semesters). It shows that you are able to grow and produce great work in more advanced courses. Grade-hungry students generally aren't good PhD material, as far as I can see. It's all about passion, hard work, and a desire to grow as an intellectual. A perfect undergrad GPA only reflects strength in background material.
  13. Personally, I get a happy fuzzy feeling whenever I see that one of my friends (even if it's a distant friend or acquaintance) gets an acceptance on Facebook. I really don't think it's an issue as long as you're not the type of person that people see as a braggart or conceited.
  14. Yeah I would also prefer that it had the free 3G just in case this becomes a problem. I know that the screen on the Fire is pretty small too (7"?). Is there a zoom function for papers because I can imagine they would be pretty difficult to read on such a small screen.
  15. Looking into buying an ereader with limited functionality and a good price tag ($200 or less), primarily for reading scientific research papers. Has anyone purchased one with good PDF functionality?
  16. 6/10 submitted, rest are due in a few weeks. I already get nervous every time I receive an email alert on my phone. This is going to be a stressful couple of months..
  17. I wouldn't worry about your scores. From what I can see your quant score is very high (assuming the percentile is around 90%+), and the verbal shouldn't hurt you much. I don't think a CS department would take that into account unless your writing reflects that score.
  18. Hey guys, anyone else want to trade CS SoPs? If so pm me.
  19. If you're looking at only top schools your GRE school shouldn't matter too much, unless it is strikingly bad. What are your percentiles? I'm not familiar with the new scoring system. How much research experience do you have? I think that will help/hurt you more.
  20. I mean, I think he got into all of those schools based on his excellent research experience. If I were on the adcom for those schools, I would have like to been able to get to know him on a personal level through his SoP. I feel like it's difficult to get an idea of what his personality is like and what it would be like to work with him through his SoP.
  21. Am I the only person who doesn't like this SoP? I find it very impersonal and uninteresting. All I know about Mihai from reading this is that he was an exceptional researcher and earned many awards. I could have found that out by looking at his C.V. I assume...
  22. I can't find this information anywhere on the GRE website or here. Approximately how much time does it take for additional score reports to get to a school after they are ordered?
  23. Exactly. My reason would simply be: you're the only school who actually wants it. And it's kind of useless...?
  24. Does anyone know if the "requirement" on Columbia's website that CS PhD applicants must take the subject test is actually enforced? There seems to be a lot of mixed information on their site/application.
  25. I'm generally unsure about the tone of my SoP when applying to CS PhD programs. Obviously I'm going to focus on research experience, but it's difficult to make an SoP personal when it is about a science rather than a humanities subject. There seems to be a lot more correlation between a person's personal life and their research interests when pursuing a humanities PhD, while the same (usually) cannot be said for a science PhD. Does anyone have any examples where an applicant was able to combine a strong statement of research interests with some personal dialogue? That's really my only problem with writing my SoP at the moment. Thanks!
