hobokennojokin Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Hate to ask but can whoever posted the UPENN acceptance claim it and provide some additional information? UPENN is one of the schools I think many of us on this thread are anxiously waiting to hear from. Thanks!
undmich Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 any one here applied for demography instead of sociology at Penn?
felicidad Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Well, I got the acceptance e-mail this morning at like 8am central time with the subject heading, "Hoping to welcome you to Penn." The e-mail said that I would be offered a funding package competitive for other top universities and that more details were coming soon. They were trying to set up a visiting day some time in March. I don't know why my test scores didn't show upon when I posted on the results survey. V:162, Q: 152, Analytica 5.5. Solid, but hardly likely to put me at the top of the pile. My GPA was 3.4, 3.6 major. However, my school started a pretty heavy campaign of grade deflation my first year. I have three years of teaching experience, and great recs.

Felicidad, thanks for the post and stats. Was the email from the DGS? I'm hoping against hope I get an email later today.. bah
danielcharles87 Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Felicidad, congratulations! I had very comparable stats so I'm hoping to receive the same email offering acceptance - this was definitely one of my top choices!

I can only hope to get that kind of email from the programs I applied to!
ducksoup Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Fel, I am so happy for you. I know a big weight has been lifted off your shoulders.
SocHope Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 I've been hoping to hear back from them! Congrats, Felicidad!
ThisSlumgullionIsSoVapid Posted January 30, 2012 Posted January 30, 2012 Congratulations! Oh, what I would give to get accepted to UPENN. That's a great program and a cool place to live.
AnotherAntho Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 (edited) I received the same acceptance letter too! =) Hoping to meet you there in march. Funnily enough, I'm we have roughly the same stats (V=162, Q=154, GPA 3.63, 3.75 (major)). I'm coming straight out of undergrad, graduating in May. Might I ask what you plan on specializing in? Medical sociology here. Edited February 4, 2012 by AnotherAntho
hobokennojokin Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Looks like a first wave of acceptances must have indeed gone out. I can only hope to be in the second! Congrats to you both!
sleepycat Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 ooo, I have similar stats (except for the gre scores but that is another story) and the program has all three of my main interests. If this round doesn't go through, I am going to apply to Penn.
hobokennojokin Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Does anyone else's Application Status say "Incomplete" on applyweb? I may be being a bit paranoid here, but just thought i'd double check
acooper Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 Does anyone else's Application Status say "Incomplete" on applyweb? I may be being a bit paranoid here, but just thought i'd double check my Application Status was incomplete too. I sent a email to tech support and the answer was: "We apologize for the inconvenience you have experienced. Your application is complete and the institution is in the process of completing their steps and that is why the status is showing incomplete. No action required on your part."
undmich Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 it might be a mistake. mine also says incomplete and i was told my "grad school transcript is missing". i am going to come straight out of undergrad so i wont have any transcript from grad level. when i emailed DGS(demography) in december, i was told it's a system error and my application is ready for review... Does anyone else's Application Status say "Incomplete" on applyweb? I may be being a bit paranoid here, but just thought i'd double check
hobokennojokin Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 Thanks for the clarification guys. This wait is brutal. Penn is the last school I'm absolutely anxious about hearing from. baaaaaaah
50_50 Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 @undmich, I applied to the Demography PhD (without sociology), but no word on the decision yet. Have you heard anything? The coordinator said decisions would be made in late January/ early February, but I am too nervous to email back and ask if decisions have been made. Re: "incomplete", I was told, also by the coordinator, that it will mention "incomplete" until official transcripts are received, which, by the way, is not a requirement for initial processing. In the application instruction page, it says something along the lines of: send us a scanned copy of your transcripts for now and we will request for official transcripts before admissions if you get accepted.
undmich Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 no word as well here. last year they did not start to send out notification until Feb 14... which is next week, so lets be patient. @undmich, I applied to the Demography PhD (without sociology), but no word on the decision yet. largo Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Hey guys, I just talked to the sociology department, because I was too curious and the lady told me that the committee is still in a period of decision and it's gonna be out for sure in 2 or 3 weeks. Just wanted to spread the word. SocHope 1

hobokennojokin Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 2 or 3 weeks?!?!?!? THIS IS MADNESS! two to three weeks it is.
SocHope Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 So..UPenn rejections (at least some) came out this week - before the 2-3 weeks we were expecting. I don't even know what to think if I didn't get a rejection, but certainly haven't gotten an acceptance either. Grr.
