a professor from a school i applied reached me and want to talk about my research interests, and we had a phone interview. it is not like an interview, but like a information exchange. Do people send thank you letter after phone interview with potential advisor?

I would send a short thank you email - two to three lines saying thank you and expressing your continued (or increased) interest in the program.

Not so much a thank-you letter, but it would be nice to send a note mentioning how much you enjoyed getting the chance to discuss your research/their research, etc.

winmaxi - Do you mean a letter of recommendation? I personally have only asked for Letters of recommendation from professors and PhDs I've worked with or whose classes I've taken (more than one class). I got lucky and two professors offered to write me letters when I told them where I was thinking of.

Also, I am going to do thank you cards - but my interview is in person and involves a two day stay. I also plan on doing Thank you cards to the professors who helped me write my SOP, gave me feedback on my CV and wrote me Ltrs of Recommendation for grad school.

Follow up with the professor and stress that you really enjoyed speaking with them. Mention that the conversation clarified that you are very interested in their research, and then elaborate on those thoughts a little. Keep it simple, but make sure they know that you are really interested.
