I received emails from several universities I applied to (George Washington and SAIS, specifically) encouraging me to apply for several internal scholarship contests. Has anyone else received these? Are they a good omen for admissions results?

The fact that the scholarships are internal means something, IMO. How specific were the e-mails? Several days after I applied to Yale FES, they provided a password to a scholarship database (all external, and available to all applicants). If you received personalized e-mails directing you to pursue a select number of departmental scholarships, it would appear they want to provide a financial incentive before you start leaning toward a different program.

I received the same email from SAIS but not from Elliott. I didn't even pay attention to it since acceptance decision ain't rolling out till March. But Maxwell did sent me an email about scholarship offerings 2 days before accepting me in the first round. So let's hope this is a good sign!!!!

I received the SAIS email. The only one I received from GWU was about financial aid and scholarships generally. There was a link to scholarship information but the subject title was "Financial Aid Process."

I assumed all candidates received one but I have no idea. It would be nice if it bode well for our apps :)

Yeah, the SAIS one seemed pretty generic, but the GW one was a personalized message from head of admissions (or at least appeared that way). So it makes sense other people have gotten the former.

I got the same message from SAIS, I just figured they sent it to everyone

Ditto, nada from GWU either.

-MPA455 - Only the Norton fellowship is available for international students, and then only if you're doing something that'll help combat terrorism.

Well, that makes me feel good about GW but not so much about SAIS. Get away from my damn scholarship money you kids!

haha. yeah, it was def a generic email (SAIS). so is anyone writing the scholarship essays? Also, does anyone know...for the 3 fellowship opportunities they sent, is only one of each award offered per class, or are there multiple ones for each?

Yeah, I'm gonna try to keep myself busy with the essays until acceptance decisions arrived. The W.W. Norton & Company Fellowship offers 2 lucky candidates; I don't know about the other twos. The essay about "2012 election year and diplomacy" would be a time-consuming activity.

I already submitted to all three. Even with a low chance of winning, the expected value is high enough to justify the time spent working on them.

Yes, but on the other hand they're basically all related to security studies/USG service which means only a minority of candidates really have a good shot I think. Unless they define "preventing terrorism" more broadly to include IR, development, etc.

MYRNIST, did you check with SAIS to see if applicants are eligible for the third fellowship listed (Mason)? When I read the requirements it seemed pretty clear that it was just for current first year students not applicants but then I also don't know why they'd send that info to us.

True. That's exactly my specialty and career goal, but obviously YMMV.

Understatement700: No, I just applied. It would be quite strange if the Office of Admissions mass-emailed applicants about a non-eligible scholarship...
