transcendental Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Not sure if there was a topic on this one, but was surprised not to see people talking about the interview notices posted for ND's English program. I was surprised to see that they're doing interviews for English because it doesn't look like they've done them in the past for English? Congrats to whoever got the interview emails. Anyone want to claim them? I'm assuming they've all gone out by now...

I know people who have had interviews in the past, but it also seems that some people have been admitted without an interview in recent years. The people that I know who have had interviews focused on Medieval lit. Do you think they interview for that subfield?
transcendental Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Oh hmm, maybe? That could make sense since one of the posters said something along the lines of would like to have been admitted right off the bat... but I mean, who wouldn't want that anyway? There were 4 postings, so seems like kind of a lot if it were only one subfield, but I honestly have no idea. I know that Medieval is a big deal there, though. My neurotic mind wonders on.

I'm just going off past years - which look like some interviews, some directs admits. Did you read the thread from last year? Also inconclusive:)
Sparky Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 This is the first year ND's English dept has done interviews. They've been adding to the list of "humanities departments that do interviews" slowly but steadily; I guess English was just next up. Last year was the first for Literature (Comp Lit by any other name). I don't know if they're only interviewing some subfields; I would *guess* not based on the pattern, but that is just a guess.
transcendental Posted February 4, 2012 Author Posted February 4, 2012 Thanks for the insight, Sparky. It's my inclination to think you're right, too.
Ver-million Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 (edited) Mistral's hypothesis is interesting---I'm focusing in Med. Lit. and I'm one of the interviews. However, the email came from Visconsi, the head of the department, and a Renaissance scholar. He told me they were not making any offers until they interviewed all of their "finalists". Waiting on: Harvard, Penn, UVA, Yale Interview: Notre Dame Edited February 16, 2012 by hmc4f

I'm going to assume that the dice have already been tossed and that I'm long since out.
Ver-million Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Thanks, Transcendentel! And don't give up hope! It sounds like they haven't made any official decisions yet--anything can happen.
hedgerows Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Just had my interview today. If yours goes anything like mine did, be prepared to be grilled like a salmon about your writing sample, and be able to defend everything you said. My panel (via Skype) was very serious, contained some of the scholars I most admire, and I didn't know what to expect at all, so was foolishly unprepared and bumbling. Good luck to everyone interviewing! (Visconsi told me final decisions would be going out around the 1st of March, fyi, after all finalists had been interviewed.) JeremiahParadise 1
Ver-million Posted February 17, 2012 Posted February 17, 2012 Wow. Sorry, Hedgerows. That sounds very stressful. Did you do a skype interview because you couldn't make it next Friday? What is your area?
transcendental Posted March 3, 2012 Author Posted March 3, 2012 Out of curiosity, is there anyone else who wasn't invited for an interview but not yet gotten rejected? I saw a bunch of rejections go up but didn't get one yet. I assume that it just hasn't been processed but wondered if others were still waiting in a similar situation.
Smokydog Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Well, I am still in limbo. Though I applied to the Literature program. I am still waiting for any kind of answer...
darjeelingtea16 Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Well, I am still in limbo. Though I applied to the Literature program. I am still waiting for any kind of answer... I applied to Literature as well, and I called about my app a couple days ago. They told me that they're late this year and they were hoping to make a decision by the end of the past week, but maybe they won't make one 'til next week?

They told me that they're late this year and they were hoping to make a decision by the end of the past week, but maybe they won't make one 'til next week? Yes, I suppose they will be handing the answers this week. Just one question: do you know if the Literature department did any round of interviews?
darjeelingtea16 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Yes, I suppose they will be handing the answers this week. Just one question: do you know if the Literature department did any round of interviews? Ah, I asked this too, and they said that they're doing interviews again this year, and that when they do start notifying (hopefully next week!), it will be for interviews.
Smokydog Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Right now, I am feeling partly relieved to know I didn't lose (yet) the interview round. But another part of me is not looking forward to be interviewd and "grilled" as hedgerows says they did with him. :/
darjeelingtea16 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Yeah I'm hoping for good news, but then I'm also petrified about an interview. I'm confident I can handle grilling about my writing sample, but oh god if they ask me to indicate any kind of language proficiency on the spot, I might panic. It's not that I lied on my apps, but I've been almost 2 years out now and I feel really out of practice.
marlowe Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Just got an email about the waitlist for English PhD. The Professor wants to chat on the phone about some details - anybody else receive it? I am a bit confused, because it seems that the interviewees that were not given offers were given waitlists, but I was just given a straight waitlist. Excited though.

I am going to restrain myself from hoping. Was it a prof in your subfield or the DGS? Maybe if interviewed people decline the waitlist spots, they reach out to their other waitlist. I wonder if you would have to interview if you received a spot?

Not a professor in my subfield, so I presume it is the DGS.
Smokydog Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Still waiting for news and getting nervous. *Sigh*. I would really love to go there!
darjeelingtea16 Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 Still waiting for news and getting nervous. *Sigh*. I would really love to go there! You and me both! Every day that goes by and I don't get news, I get more nervous. But then I think that well, at least no one else got news yet. And then I think but not everyone who applied is on gradcafe. From there, the spiral into panic and depression.
