Rejects, Admits, Wait lists, but what about me?

I have seen admits, rejections, and wait lists to a program that I have applied to, but I have

received nothing. Is it possible to read into this at all? I have thought it possible that anything

from I am in the second round, to I am in the scrap heap and is not even worth their time looking

at, and I will be rejected along with all the other in the scrap heap once they are finished taking care

of business with the apps that were competitive. Any thoughts?

Have you made sure that they have received all your documents?

If other people have been getting results from the same program in the same school, then I think you should call or email the Grad Office.

Regal, I'm in the same boat.

I actually contacted one of the programs that has been accepting and rejecting others for more than a week already.

This is the answer i received:

"Thank you for following up on your application to XXX's Cultural

Anthropology Ph.D. Program. Faculty are currently reviewing your files. We

do have all of the necessary materials. The Graduate School will be in

touch shortly regarding the status of your application.

Thank You "

So...I don't know what to think anymore?!

Yes same school and the same program and I have seen admits, rejections, and wait lists posted here.

It's not unusual to see a time range in responses, I don't think, as faculty work their way through a pile.

People they really want get admissions, people they have easily decided they don't want get rejections, and there are probably some that they feel aren't first choices, but might work out in the end- those get wait listed early on.

This is the case in multiple schools I have applied to, but I have no reason to believe that they don't have all of my materials (I confirmed a months ago in any cases that were questionable).

I guess I'll just wait it out for now.

do they usually let you know if your waitlisted?

And yikes, how does that work with visiting the school? I live in Kentucky and have applied to two west coast schools and I have heard nothing from them. Being that their grad visitation weekends are in early March should I take the approach of waiting until they contact me, otherwise I stay put? Im worrying about these schools a bit more since they are so far away

I'd say it's a decent bet to try to wait things out another week or so, and then maybe call/send an e-mail just to check. I think mid-February is a decent date to use as a marker.

No news either. Just. Waiting. Sighhhhhh........

I think Eigen is right. You should prob know by mid-Feb if they have visits in March. And it's prob true that decisions are sent out in batches. You'll notice that in the results section too.

If anything, try to connect with other GC-ers from programs that you are applying to and see if they have any info about decisions. Maybe they're also waiting?

Good luck!

Keep in mind that Seattle was closed for three days in mid January. Undoubtedly a lot of meetings had to be rescheduled, and I'm sure that includes potential student discussions.

I am wondering if you have heard from any of those schools now that a couple weeks have passed.

A couple of my schools now have acceptances and rejections (no waitlists, though) on the results survey. I was calm about it at first, but I am starting to lose my composure.

What's really disheartening is when you see admits listed, but no waitlist or rejects yet. Some schools seem to opperate on an "accept/interview folk, reject all others later" basis that's really hell.

Honestly, I kind of wish I hadn't heard anything at all, instead of one rejection three weeks ago and a whole lot of nothing. It was better when I wasn't expecting to hear from anybody yet.

I know at least some programs don't send out any information until March, and others do their recommendations on a rolling basis. Even though the Grad College might say that PhD decisions aren't done on a rolling basis, doesn't mean the departments don't do it this way, informally contacting some people based on whatever criteria they use, and letting the Grad College send out all the official decisions after they've been made.

I'd just like to say that I'm in the same boat. And it's really freaking me out (of course I don't want to let it, but I do). I just don't know what to think when I see admits and rejections a few weeks ago...then nothing...then a few more admits. And it's my first choice school, so I have extra anxiety ;)

After more results appeared on the result survey yesterday, I broke down and decided to call one of the programs. For some reason, I decided I should call about some other trivial thing as an excuse to contact them and then lead into the status question. (I have asked them point blank before, but I think the heat of potential impending rejection is causing me to be crazy.) They answered the trivial question--"yeah" was the entire response, because it was a truly non-substantial question--and then I choked about asking my status or how many waves of acceptances/rejections they have gone through. I just hung up.

I feel like a 13-year-old boy, calling to ask that girl who sits next to me in history class to be my girlfriend, who just freezes up and breathes over the phone.

The plus side: at least you actually managed to have a conversation with them first instead of just sitting breathing into the phone like a psychopath serial killer! :P
