Art History MA Programs, news on acceptance?

Anyone else have a school recently tell them they're missing something for their application? It seems like everyone is sending out decisions, and my application is apparently incomplete. Let the freak out ensue... I received that scholarship email from SAIC and based on that thought I was in and just hadn't received the letter yet. But then I come to find out they are missing my GRE scores, which were sent 4 months ago! Total meltdown time, why did this have to happen at the start of the weekend and with my first choice school nonetheless?!

For those who applied to SAIC, just spoke with the art history department about the dual MA program - decisions were mailed yesterday. Fingers cross!

i contacted karen at williams yesterday and she has to yet to respond. i also contacted my poi and he responded warmly and cced her. urghghgh..has anyone else contacted for status?

contiguous, did it take long for you to get the response? have you made decisions yet ?

I sent it at night and Gottlieb responded the following morning. I haven't yet decided- I know that it's improbable that I'll get off the waitlist before April 15 so I need to settle on one of my other options, but I can't help but hope that someone else will hurry up and refuse a Williams offer to open up spots.

i just wish i got a response..they do have 12 spots at least so you could get off the waitlist still..i hope it goes well for you...fingers crossed : )

even then it would come down to funding. but thank you for the well-wishes and I hope you have good news from Williams too! :)

It looks like a standard letter with a VERY personalized paragraph embedded.

Now that's intriguing....

I applied to three programs in London- two MA and one MLitt. I really want to go to school in the UK (Free museum access? Easy travel throuhgout Europe? Yes please!) but my GPA (3.23) limited a lot of my options as did application deadlines. The plus is though, the GRE isn't required over there so I was able to put that off a bit longer.

I have a a phone interview with Birkbeck next week, and then I have no idea how long after that it takes to get an acceptance/rejection confirmation. Richmond doesn't require an interview and their website says that admitted students must submit their confirmation letter and deposit by May 1st- which leads me to assume I will know in the next few weeks. I also have had an interview requested by the Christie's education program- but it is not until the middle of June!

If I get in to Birkbeck or Richmond before June I'll have a tough call to make as to whether or not I should still interview at Christie's......especially because RIchmond requires a deposit so early.... so much pressure!

It's the 3rd paragraph of that long email in which Cohen mentioned my undergraduate records, the exact content of my SOP, the faculty members (not limited to Art History) whom I could work with, and he even suggested possible new directions for my proposed study!

Totally surprised when I read it this morning....

hah! For some reason I misread 'paragraph' as 'photograph.' I know art historians are visual people, but still...

Odd they would pay so much attention to detail and then leave the rest as a form letter! It takes time and effort to be that specific, which seems genuine regardless of the rest of the email.

First post on here, so I hope I'm doing this correctly.

I was accepted into all four of my MA applications: M.Litt History of Photography - St. Andrew's, MA Art History - University of Toronto, MA Contemporary Art Theory - Goldsmiths (Univ. of London) and MA History of Art - UCL (University College London). So far UCL is my top choice.

My girlfriend, also in Art History, received acceptance into the brand new MA Critical Theory & the Arts @ SVA (School of Visual Arts) in NYC along with another school.

Tough (albeit, privileged) decisions ahead!

Hey, is anyone going to be studying in Syracuse in the fall? I want to know more about their individualized M.A. to see if it's a decent program since I'm now accepted. It's less expensive than living in a big city (like NYC), and since I want to pursue a PhD I'd rather not waste money during my M.A....Not to mention I'm only just graduating from undergrad and don't have a lot of internship or work experience under my belt.

Also, I never heard back from American University. I wasn't that impressed with them, but it would still be nice to know. Did anyone happen to apply to them as well?

@ Runks,

I have a colleague who went to Syracuse for a MA - my colleague is an impressive scholar in their own right, but it doesn't sound like the program was that great. However, my colleague enjoyed the experience since they went to a very small undergraduate school and felt they didn't have the skills/knowledge to go straight to a PhD. However, this colleague only got into one PhD program and it's a bit low on the "scale." Take that how you will.

Honestly, I am someone who strictly believes that the individual is worth more than the school name or rank - so if you work hard on your own accomplishments, it will only bode well for you.

Does anyone know what's up with SAIC's financial aid? I know they have some merit scholarships, so I called the office. "If you are awarded aid, you'll get a letter in 3-5 business days. If you're not awarded aid, you won't get a letter". So I called back days later and a different secretary told me that decisions are included in the initial admission letter? If they don't have any funding available, there's no way I can consider attending.

That's good to know about Syracuse, I heard something similar about their MFA program, oddly enough. I'm getting the picture that their program seems to be what you make of it, which is fine with me. It also sounds like they're making improvements and adding to their program, so I suppose I'll see how it turns out. Funny that I also went to a small undergrad school and also wanted a terminal MA! Thanks.

Perhaps contacting the school about funding issues could help. Although it wasn't for an Art History M.A., a close friend of mine tried that, and because of his stellar qualifications he was able to get a little more aid.

Accepted into one M.A program @ the royal college of art in the UK. I don't know much about it, or its reputation. I have been out of school for a while, so I do not know who to ask. Does anybody know? Can anyone help?

Hello,

I had other choices here in the US for Contemporary Art History and/or Latin American Art....but my GRE scores are really bad, hence the search for programs that do not require these scores.   I came across MA Contemporary Ar Theory - Goldsmiths and I'm very interested in applying...

What do you think they want in someone who is applying to their program?  If you can share your qualifications or your thoughts on the qualifications they are looking for...I would really appreciate it...it will give me a better sense as to where I stand.

I was also thinking about MA Art History at UCL, but I am in love with Goldsmiths' Contemporary Art Theory...

Thanks, I appreciate all your help....

The MA program at Williams offers graduate students several opportunities to curate exhibits and shows, and I think you should consider applying there LatinartGal! Virginia Commonwealth University offers a Curatorial Ph.D, and one of the professors there, Michael Schreffield (not sure about spelling), is primarily interested in Latin American Art, so I suggest you look at VCU's Art History website, what you see may tickle your fancy!
