HunkyDory Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 I am not sure if we only take grad classes or if we also take undergrad classes? For the grad classes, these are the classes I am interested in just from descriptions: World Literature and Globalism: Theory and Practice (think how cool it would be to use this to design a class!) British Cultural Studies, Lit and Film Chaucer Criticism and Theory (though I bet I'd need to brush up on Middle English) Victorian Triple Decker (after teaching and thoroughly enjoying A Tale of Two Cities this year, I have grown to like Victorian lit more) Borderland Narratives: The 1st Century Modernism and Its Discontents Black Subjectivity Orietalism and Imperialism Thoeries of Race and Ethnicity (though I wish it had more detail!) I'm not sure about Undegrad classes, but I would assume you just audit them if you like, and take grad classes for credit. My only MUST TAKE is a Benjamin class in the Comp Lit Department.
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 16, 2012 Posted April 16, 2012 Man, UT Austin was like the get in off the waitlist school this year. Too awesome. I guess the administration wouldn't let the department make first round offers to more than their approved class size (20), so some people who in a another year would've had first round offers ended up on the waitlist. Which is a little strange, but you won't hear this girl complaining. I think you should visit us, Trip! GuateAmfeminist 1
WendyMoira Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 So I'm sitting in my fourth hour classroom, which is empty because my students are taking the stupid FCAT, and I'm supposed to be putting together the grammar presentation I'm supposed to give to some other teachers next month. What am I actually doing? Plotting my move to Austin... Fiona Thunderpaws and marlowe 2
marlowe Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Anyone have an idea of how many courses we take in the first year?

What am I actually doing? Plotting my move to Austin... I know how this goes. Does anyone know much about the graduate housing scene down there? I'd like to live where other grads live if possible, but it seems like there is an endless possibility of neighborhoods to pick from. Anyone have an idea of how many courses we take in the first year? I want to say it's three per semester, but don't hold me to that. Edited April 17, 2012 by Fiona Thunderpaws
WendyMoira Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Anyone have an idea of how many courses we take in the first year? Pretty sure it's three. I could be wrong, though.
HunkyDory Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 It's Three...but that doesn't include the Lit Survey course that you TA.
marlowe Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 (edited) It's Three...but that doesn't include the Lit Survey course that you TA. Right, I've got that bit. The TA load here is smaller than at other schools I visited. Do we have any required cohort classes in the first year, though? Edited April 17, 2012 by marlowe
WendyMoira Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 I think Dr. Lesser mentioned a cohort class in the second year. It's the methods class, right? Lots of schools have that first year "intro to grad school" class, but I don't see one here that seems like that kind of course.

Lots of schools have that first year "intro to grad school" class, but I don't see one here that seems like that kind of course. It's this one: E 384K • Approaches To Disciplnry Inqus 35775 • Wojciehowski, Hannah C Meets W 600pm-900pm PAR 210 hide description This course will allow students to gain a fuller sense for the complexity and variety of research methods available to literary scholars. We will spend the semester thinking about literary and cultural criticism from the inside out—that is, we will be reading and discussing the methodological and argumentative moves that scholars make. Along the way we will ask a number of urgent questions: How do scholars read now—and how did they read then? What is the status of theory in twenty-first century literary studies? How does the fall out from the so-called “culture wars” inform and inflect current practices? What do we talk about when we talk about archival research? What would it mean to “always historicize”? Finally, what are the relations between our roles as writers and professionals? The conversation engendered by such questions will better position students to embark on Master’s Report and dissertation research. The course will also: introduce the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center and other collections-based resources; offer a shared, “cohort” experience for all second-year graduate students; help said students further orient themselves to both the department and the profession.
Fiona Thunderpaws Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 Kind of strange it's a second year thing, but it sounds pretty interesting as far as required classes go. Part of me does wish they had some sort class or seminar for first years though--it's be nice to get to know the whole cohort when we're all still new to the area. GuateAmfeminist 1

At the recruitment weekend they described it as a primer to writer the Master's thesis, so I think it's more focused towards that. I wish there were some good Lit Theory courses though--that's the one thing I really want to get stronger with.
lyonessrampant Posted April 17, 2012 Posted April 17, 2012 35775 • Wojciehowski, Hannah C She is wonderful (or so I've heard from a friend in the department). . and her work is awesome. . I'm jealous
marlowe Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 judging by the people on TGC already going, the Fall 2012 class will be awesome! Congrats to Guate and Fiona. I think I'll accept my offer right this moment. See y'all in Austin. Yes. Just re-read this entire thread. SO MUCH AWESOME NOSTALGIA: Fiona, Ophelia, aeplo, Guate -- even that asshole dokkeynot! GREATEST cohort ever. PARTY AT OPHELIA's TOMORROW NIGHT!!! That's it. Officially best cohort ever. I feel that we have a significant responsibility to create the greatest future cohorts ever. Antecedent, you are next. GuateAmfeminist and antecedent 2
WendyMoira Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 "Quite right." --Cubie. Also, "Marlowe," I think we should perhaps discuss this obsession you have with creating the future cohorts...
