Abbott Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Please see my post in the chat thread about Princeton's wait list. So it goes. Thanks for the update.
New England Nat Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Of course, the information you said there is about PRINCETON, right? I know that it is of course similar at other schools (they look for different people off the waitlists etc..) but I don't think all is doomed for us waiting at other schools, right? Please, please, please? The post only relates to Princeton and is entirely based on the information they released today. Basically they could have more than a third of the people they made offers to decline before I think they'd pull from the wait list.

New England Nat Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Out of morbid curiosity how many people were on the waitlist? No way of knowing that I'm afraid. What was posted was a list of names, fields, previous institutions and email addresses. And the fields thing is natoriously ... vague. For instance "China/Japan" is something that gets joked about a lot.

wikichic Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I found out that I was wait listed almost a month ago. What a long month it has been! And now to wait another month at least?! March is not going to be fun for us wait listers, is it?
wikichic Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Also- is it a common thing for people on wait lists to withdraw their wait list if they've got an offer from another comparable program? I know a lot of people on this forum were wait listed at some programs, but also accepted at others outright. Would you withdraw your wait list in favor of your acceptances, or wait until you see all your options? I'm not sure what I would do if I was in a similar position. I know I'm over analyzing this a bit. But, hey, that's what we do.

I know I'm over analyzing this a bit. But, hey, that's what we do. It depends on where the school that wait listed you is on your list. If it's your top choice, then I'm assuming you'd wait it out regardless. If you've already gotten in places you prefer more than the place you are wait listed, then you might as well withdraw. I've done the latter within a week of getting notified about a wait list, since I hope it means someone else who really wants to go and (if there is some type of ordered wait list) it means someone else can move up. That would seem to be both the fairest and most logical thing to do.
wikichic Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I guess I reside more in the former group. I have one acceptance and one wait list, so I don't have much wiggle room. I hate to leave my accepted program hanging while I hear back from my wait list program. I guess that sort of thing is common, though. It is stressing me out a little, especially since I thought I wouldn't get in anywhere this cycle. My application wasn't as clean as it should've been, and I had already resigned myself to applying next year before I got any word back. But if I can get in at my top choice program without another application cycle- it would be nothing short of a miracle.
wikichic Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 Also- thanks for being so considerate in withdrawing your wait list quickly! Good luck with your remaining choices

uhohlemonster Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 hey wait list clan! wait listed at rutgers. hear we go! or rather, not wait listed, as the vice chair of grad programs said. not ranked, by field, etc. either way, a wait list! i hope the rutgers jewish or israel historian who was admitted gets a better deal elsewhere and i get a shot at my top choice.
wikichic Posted February 29, 2012 Posted February 29, 2012 I hope so too, monster! Congrats! I feel like this should be a more active thread for those of us still sitting on our heels. I'm not exactly sure how the process works at my top choice school, but hopefully it's pretty similar to the way you describe how it works at Rutgers. It is going to be a looong month.
uhohlemonster Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Thanks guys! Oseirus, you're hilarious. I feel like I just got virtually chair-lifted.
oseirus Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Thanks guys! Oseirus, you're hilarious. I feel like I just got virtually chair-lifted. Well hopefully this ketubah between you & whatever prospective school you choose will be financially beneficial to you
wikichic Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I think I'll get the chair-lifted feeling when I get that official "Yes! We want you!" Right now I just feel so unsure as to what may or may not happen- I've been sitting with this for about a month now. I felt jubilation at first and now I feel like April won't come quickly enough.
MinervasOwl Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 I think I got possibly the most awfully worded waitlist email .....I have been ranked "in the next group of four applicants to be offered admission if the current 5 offers are not accepted." It sounds like all the current 5 people would have to say no before I finally get admitted
wikichic Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Geez, that's harsh. I've never seen one worded that way before. I feel like they should assess each candidate on their own merits rather than grouping you together. The oddities of the admissions process....

TMP Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Wow. That's definitely not Wisconsin. I can't see them writing that.
uhohlemonster Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Hey, have any of you been encouraged to use other offers as a "bargaining tool"? my UG advisor and other profs from there really think i should flaunt what I got, but I'm so nervous that it'll go wrong. You know? What if they think "well she's got other options that seem good, we dont need to offer her anything."
