jma310 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Hi, can someone claim the Fordham? What's your field? I have slight hope left for myself here, but it's dwindling.
jma310 Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 Congrats! I thought I had a good chance... Ahh! I'm 19c British primarily but also American. And gender stuffs.
transcendental Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 Thanks! Sorry yeah I'm not sure of cohort size and how many people in each field etc. Since there aren't any other posts up yet, I doubt they are done making offers. My guess is that they've just started. Good luck!
jma310 Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 one can only hope! would you mind PMing me funding details? i'm from ny so i'm quite curious *if* i got in, if i'd commute or try and find a place!
Aztecson23 Posted February 20, 2012 Posted February 20, 2012 I'm assuming my winning streak is over--have two acceptances with funding and an interview at a prestigious school. But Fordham...not so sure.
jma310 Posted February 20, 2012 Author Posted February 20, 2012 aztecson... i don't know what that means lol. you haven't heard anything?
Aztecson23 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 aztecson... i don't know what that means lol. you haven't heard anything? Yup, nothing. Since my two acceptances (thus far) came from POIs, and since a Fordham POI called the lone admit, I assume I am not in. It's a syllogism, you see, akin to "All men are mortal," "Socrates was a man"--->"Socrates is mortal": "POIs have called me thus far," "Fordham POI did not call me"--->"I did not get in to Fordham." As you can see, I'm.slowly.losing.my.mind. JeremiahParadise 1
bigdgp Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Transcendental, I'm currently a 1st year PhD at Fordham. It really is a wonderful place to study. I'm amazed by the support that profs are willing to offer! Feel free to PM me if you have questions.
bigdgp Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 For those who have not heard yet: because Fordham is dedicated to offering personal interaction with profs., they have POIs notify. It's very sincere, but can take a little while. Last year notifications came out over the course of about a week. Don't lose heart yet.

Any word about the number of admits for this application season?
bigdgp Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Hard to say how many admits there will be this year. Last year was a smallish class (8 I think), but that is mostly because the year before was quite big.
MrsDedalus Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 When I visited the campus a few months ago, I remember the DGS saying they generally admit about 6-12 applicants, depending on the funding the University gives them for PhD students---since they fully fund everyone for 5 years, and that they receive about 100 applications each app season.
Dagny1984 Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 Thank you Decaf and Expresso Shot. transcendental 1
jma310 Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 Dagny- i emailed eve keller and she said i wasn't being offered admission. i'm not sure if they're still making offers but she said "official word comes from the graduate school" which is bizarre because i know they call those accepted... take that for what it's worth. also she said ~10% admission rate.

jma310 Posted February 21, 2012 Author Posted February 21, 2012 it's okay! i'm gearing up for a different career path i think...
transcendental Posted February 21, 2012 Posted February 21, 2012 it's okay! i'm gearing up for a different career path i think... That's great (I hope!). If you end up not going the PhD route now, it would always be waiting for you later. People have been telling me this and I ignored it, but there was a dude at my MA institution that was over 60, so hey.

Sorry JMA. Try again next year or in a few. I also had people over 60 in my MA program. Thank you for the heads up.
bigdgp Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Yeah, even those who have already received calls don't have "official word." I was called last year by my POI about 2-3 weeks before I received the official word. I think this is because after admissions decisions are made, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences receives a list of admitted students from the various departments in order to determine to whom they will offer competitive supplemental funding.
MelleMelville Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Hi, that was me. My field is Early and 19th C American Lit and place/space. I don't know if they've made other offers or how many they've made, so I wouldn't give up yet. Lenny Cassuto called me. I'm kind of in shock - I was not expecting that at all. Hey, transcendental, it seems like we have incredibly similar interests. I don't know if that bodes well for my acceptance to Fordham, since it means I'm also a good fit for the program, or badly, since they might not want two people studying the same things. Either way, I'm happy whenever a fellow Americanist gets good news! Congrats!

It's cool that we have similar interests! I hope you hear some good news soon!
transcendental Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 I love the new Fordham acceptance post: POI called me while I was at Denny's at around 8:30PM--I'm in California, so this means that were calling at 11:30PM their time. I'm ok with that. Congrats to whoever it was!

And in case this helps, the POI said that I was the only 19th centurist admittee which I would imagine to mean the British 19 c. since I work on the Romantics. And I'm very excited.
