Who's going to the campus visiting day? And, do you know if there are any travel funds which may be accessed? (Feel free to PM me)

In the email from the DGS ("Welcome to Columbia") it notes that you can either have the department admin (Pamela Rodman pbr2101@columbia.edu ) book your travel tickets, or you can send her the receipts and get reimbursed that way. I'd suggest emailing her and getting confirmation that you will also get reimbursed for international travel (you are international, right?). I'm just taking a train from Boston to NYC!

But I will indeed be there.

Anyone know if, from that post above, only 16 students were accepted? Man, I feel blessed. But also illogically lucky.

still no rejection here. and none from rutgers either.

Jma, I sent an email inquiry to Rutgers and got my rejection. I've been too scared to send on to Columbia, though.

Sorry to hear rainy-day :/

I wouldn't mind emailing Columbia to see whats up- but whoooom??

I emailed Dr. Crane, the DGS, about something in my application in the beginning of the month. She was very friendly and cordial, happy to answer my email, and even told me to email her again to keep her updated.

So she's an option. I'm not emailing her though, because I want to hold on to the glimmer of hope that "no response" elicits, no matter how psychologically damaging it is. Basically, I'm a drug addict for graduate schools, and I'm telling you how to get better, but I'm not going to take my own advice.

I will be attending the visiting day next week. I look forward to meeting all you guys who will be there! Columbia was very helpful in making my travel arrangements for me.

Does anyone else find the emails with a link somewhat in poor taste? Something tells me Miss Manners would not approve!

Also, thanks for the Rutgers condolences! It wasn't the best fit, so I was expecting it. And Columbia, well I already cried about them when acceptances went out (over share?) and now I'm just happy to have closure.

Congrats to all who got in!!!

Hey fellow prospectives, just wondering if anyone could give me a report on how the campus visit went and your impressions of the place? (Feel free to PM me.) Thanks! :)

I can send you a more detailed PM later, if you'd like, but I can say that the campus visit for me was absolutely wonderful. Everyone (faculty and students alike) were very friendly and generous with their time and attention, and often very warm. The campus was beautiful--but perhaps I say this because it was 60 degrees and sunny, and my undergraduate campus was full of soviet-style mid-century architecture. :P It overall seemed like a pretty democratic sort of place. Also, EVERYONE I talked to said that the undergraduates there are really amazing, which matters if you'll be TAing. :)

Campus apartments were pretty nice too. Much more spacious than I had anticipated, for very decent rent.

I visted there last week (not for English), and had a similar impression. It also seems like many of the departments get along well with one another, and so students get to do lots of cross-disciplinary work, should they so choose. Also, I saw some of the classrooms -- they're really well set up, have computers and projectors -- I can imagine it'd be a really nice environment to TA in.

Did anyone else apply for ICLS? I had a nice chat with the current DGS, so if anyone has any questions about that, feel free to PM me.

Thanks heaps for the feedback girlmostlikely! I appreciate it. Did your visit help confirm your decision?

Anybody else get the offer to the MA program? Originally I was thinking I wouldn't even consider it, because I have some other offers, but...it is Columbia, after all!

Any thoughts on this? Unfunded MA at Columbia versus funded PhD programs? Arrggg! I thought I was done!

Stately, I'd run with your other offers (UMass and BU?) -- Columbia's tempting, but that's some BIG TIME debt you're talking, if you're considering living in NYC unfunded.

Do not go into debt, especially if you have funded options to choose from. Taking on Columbia + NYC debt is foolhardy at best and could ultimately be a major financial disaster for you a few years down the road. Though I cannot produce statistics, I can say from at least a few rather devastating anecdotes that top-tier MAs do nothing to guarantee later admission into a funded PhD program.

I think it's just the prospect of potentially attending Columbia... It's so hard to resist!

I know the rational thing to do is follow the money, especially because my other offers are good ones. But it's Columbia! :o

lol. I think I'll do the right thing regardless. I think...
