thanks guys, the admit is from USC..I want to go to the States with my current girlfriend (prospective wife)..She needs to get fluent in English in the first months, and may not work so our budget can be tight in the beginning...she's an engineer, so we hope, eventually, she'll find a job in the industry...

Hello everyone, I got an admit from a university at Los Angeles; they offered 23k for 5 years...I'm trying to figure out whether this money is enough for living comfortably in LA... PS. I'm thinking about a modest life (cooking most of the time, going out maybe once a week, etc.) all comments& thoughts appreciated!
  9. Hey guys, a few days ago I learned that I was accepted to usc's phd program in comparative literature luckily, - I feel blessed - I get to choose between at least 2 programs...if you know anything about the program or the faculty or usc in general, please do write!
  10. Hello everyone again! Pelin, I applied to USC, Northwestern, Columbia, SUNY Binghamton, Duke, Yale, Princeton, Rice, Umass Amherst and Indiana...I've just learned that I got a yearly extra $4000 for Buffalo, so I believe it's a good offer now..
  11. Thanks FuzzyLogician, that was really helpful. Do you know whether it is difficult to get a J1 visa?
  12. Hello everyone! I am not sure this is the right forum for this msg...I've applied to about 10 programs in comparative literature..If I get accepted and get decent funding, I want to go the US with my girlfriend (we don't believe in long distance relationships )..We've agreed that we could marry "on paper" (we don't believe in marriage either) to meet the visa requirements for her...The only piece of info I found out is that she has to have a J1 in order to be able to work in the US...Does anyone know anything about the process?
  13. Thank you all for the most helpful comments..NinjaMermaid, thanks a lot! I will definitely send you a msg if I accept SUNY's offer. There isn't much to do fight now other than waiting for the other unis I suppose..
  14. Thank you guys for the helpful comments! I think I now have a general idea about the finances...I may get an award from the uni, that would be a huge relief (fingers crossed)..
  15. Hey Pelin! Thanks ! They already offered a teaching assistantship, and this is the price they are willing to pay..I might get a presidential award, dunno yet..I'm from Bogazici btw, and it sure feels odd to write this msg in English instead of Turkish..
  16. Thank you Marxist_feminist! They sent me an e-mail last week..Good luck!
