I really have my fingers crossed for you crystalleem. I don't really have any details. The official letter is to follow. But the email said they have a waitlist for admissions and funding. I'll keep you updated if I find out anything else.

Congrats Jbarks! I received an acceptance email today as well :) Their open house conflicts with another school's open house, so I'm not sure how I'm going to work that out...

Good luck to you, crystalleem, and anyone else waiting!

Yay, Cquin. Congrats! I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it either. It would be trek to get there. Also, I'm leaning toward another program that I plan to visit then.

Anybody else get their funding details in the mail yet? I did: 2/2 teaching load for 12.5K stipend. That's definitely rough. I'm not complaining about funding, per se, but, yeah, I'm kind of complaining....

UGH I just got the same funding offer. And did you notice that out of state tuition is only waived for the first year? The difference between in-state and out-of-state is like $600/credit hour. And even in the first year, the insurance requirement + fees mean you have to shell out $2500 from your "very generous" stipend. And funding is only guaranteed for 4 years. Meanwhile, on a 2/2, you're only given 9 credit hours/semester and they wonder why time to completion is increasing?

I haven't gotten a better offer yet, but I was really hoping I wouldn't have to double my student loan debt just to get my PhD.

Yeah, I'm complaining, too. :(

I haven't been accepted by FSU--but I've read through the student manual a couple of times, and I'm pretty sure that the reason out-of-state tuition isn't waived after the first year is because they expect you to establish residency in Florida by your second year. But you're right, FSU doesn't give very good funding. Here's to hoping we both receive better offers? =D

That's how I read it, also, so at least we're not expected to pay the in-state/out-of-state difference (unless, of course, one is adamant about not becoming a Florida resident). But still, the funding leaves A LOT to be desired.

Yes, I received the same deal. FSU has a great set of medievalists, which is my field; however, for me, I think it's going to come down to the funding with them. I have better offers from two other programs that I'm really enthusiastic about. I also can't attend the open house in two weeks, so I don't know. Is anyone going to the open house?

Edit: Also, no health insurance waiver, which is kind of deal breaker.

While the offer of paying for the cost of a single night in a hotel was a nice gesture, I'm simply in no position financially to book a flight for a couple of weeks from now to attend an Open House (I live in Ohio, and assuming the cost would range in the several hundreds). Plus, I have this other thing I'm always forgetting I have to do--teach. Anyone else planning on going?

Also in Ohio, also can't afford a plane ticket, also can't drop my 4 classes on someone else just to go to an open house. :(

That's reassuring about the residency in one year - some states have really stringent requirements to prevent students from doing that. I'd be way more psyched about the school if I thought going there wasn't going to be more expensive than it's worth. If the state of English higher ed was in better shape, it might be different - but to know you're going to graduate with credentials that might not get you a job to pay back your loans? Really hard sell.

Sadly, it's still currently my best option. Fingers crossed for other schools and better offers!

Got a weird response to my email inquiring about my application. It said, "At this time we are still waiting for our first round offers to make their decisions. You were not in that rounds of offers and should seriously consider any other offers you have received."

Is that a rejection? Does that mean there will be a round 2 if people decline? Anybody know what this means?

Just my impression, but that sounds to me like you're not out of the running yet, but that they don't expect to have a huge waitlist. If you were straight-up rejected, I'd think they'd be a lot clearer about it than that.

I finally emailed Janet Atwater to see what had happened to my application (I've heard absolutely zilch this whole month), and I got an email back from Kristie Fleckenstein, one of the rhet/comp faculty. She said they were "enthusiastic" about my application, but they couldn't tell me anything for sure until next week. So...it sounds like I'm waitlisted, and they may be pulling from this list soon?

Needless to say, I'm starting to get excited. My only acceptance so far is to an unfunded program, so an FSU acceptance would be just the break I need.

Best of luck, ribeth! I will be declining my acceptance (MA) so I hope it helps you out!

Thanks! I can use all the luck I can get.

I applied to the Creative Writing Ph.D and haven't heard anything, either. I've seen acceptances and rejections in my genre. I wonder if I'm on some non-notified waitlist, too? Why don't they just tell people they're on a waitlist?

Reviving this thread now that FSU has started to send out acceptances this year (one of which I received, yay)! Is anyone going to the open house?

Congrats, nrenae.  I'll be at the open house, but still waiting for them to send a schedule.

Congratulations to you too, HereToday! I'm also waiting on the agenda, and I've been waffling back and forth a lot on whether or not I should actually go. I want to, don't get me wrong, but I'm having trouble swallowing the cost of a plane ticket or rental car on my current stipend. The program sounds really cool, but I also have better offers funding-wise. Grrr....decisions, decisions.

Don't pay for a rental car- the hotel they're putting us up in is pretty close to campus and they'll arrange for transpo.  I'm in the same boat, and I have to find a sub for a class that I'll miss, but I definitely want to check out the campus and meet with some faculty and students before deciding.    PM me if you decide to go-
