  1. HereToday

    New York, NY

Hey Folks- fellow grad student leaving NYC with my fiancee, but we own our apartment in Crown Heights (Brooklyn) and will be renting it out for a few years starting in August. It's a two bedroom and 20 minutes to downtown Manhattan (25 to NYU). A Grad Cafe-er helped us out in our new city and we thought we'd pay it forward here. Send me a PM if interested and I'll pass on the craigslist link. Cheers.
  2. ...gone tomorrow. Will be attending University of Arizona.
  3. CUNY is New York City's public university school system (City University of New York), there are several colleges that all are a part of CUNY. As the poster above indicated, City College is one of these colleges and is a senior college that grants Bachelor's and Master's degrees. On Grad Cafe: one of CUNY's other schools, the Graduate Center, is often referred to simply as CUNY, probably better to call it CUNY Grad Center. CUNY Grad Center offers the PhDs, and at CUNY CCNY you can go up to the Master's level degree.
  4. Tough, tough decision, but I just turned down a fully funded offer & fellowship at Florida State University (FSU). Also turned down partially funded offer at University of Hawaii and removed myself from University of Denver waitlist. Hope this helps someone out.
  5. Don't pay for a rental car- the hotel they're putting us up in is pretty close to campus and they'll arrange for transpo. I'm in the same boat, and I have to find a sub for a class that I'll miss, but I definitely want to check out the campus and meet with some faculty and students before deciding. PM me if you decide to go-
  6. Congrats, nrenae. I'll be at the open house, but still waiting for them to send a schedule.
  7. Maybe: http://books.google.com/books/about/Class_Structure_in_the_Social_Consciousn.html?id=l3XkGHnp2q4C
  8. When I first applied to MFA programs, I didn't get into anything. The next year I did the dance again, got into one, and it was at the bottom of my list: I ended up loving it, and then I applied-received an MA, taught a few years at the university & community college level, and loved that, too. Put together a small list of schools/POIs that I wanted to continue my research at/with, spent a year prepping (still tanked the GREs), and so far have been accepted to one, and wait-listed at another (waiting to hear from 2 more). Untraditional route to a PhD, but it was mine and I owned it, and couldn't be happier. Seems like very few people have a plan for grad school that works out as planned. Allow yourself to be bummed for a day or two, and then make a new plan and go for it. It'll hurt for a bit, but then new and more doors will open for you, if you work at it. You won't be the first person to have a crappy application season, and you definitely won't be the first to bounce back afterward.
  9. Just registered for it- the program looks pretty solid and it's only a bus ride away. The other conference on narrative theory I was considering is in Paris (Narrative Matters) this summer and looks even more interesting, but, alas, Paris is bit more than a bus ride away. Looking at your sig block, and if you aren't a member already, I recommend taking a look at the International Society for the Study of Narrative (ISSN): membership includes a subscription to the Narrative journal ($28 for students!) and there are some additional resources (their website needs work though).
  10. Anyone attending this year's International Conference on Narrative at MIT?
  11. I was one of them. Email from DGS and a Teaching Assistantship, but no details; those are to follow, via snail mail. Also mentioned an open house on March 18 which they might help cover the cost of a hotel- I might take them up on it if I can work out my teaching schedule.
