shaxmaty1848 Posted February 22, 2012 Posted February 22, 2012 Hey everyone, Just wondering if anyone is into the history of science and technology or knows anyone who is and has applied for graduate programs? One of the programs I applied to was Georgia Tech for Hist of Sci MS.
Riotbeard Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 I work on history of medicine, but you should check out MIT, Vandy, Hopkins, Stanford, Upenn. At least those seem somewhat obvious to me. What kind of stuff do you work on?
shaxmaty1848 Posted February 24, 2012 Author Posted February 24, 2012 I mostly work on Cold War era things.
New England Nat Posted February 24, 2012 Posted February 24, 2012 If you are interested in the cold war you should look into Michael Gordin's work at princeton.
Riotbeard Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 Hopkins and MIT have a large 20th cent. big science people in their history of sci/tech/med departments.
shaxmaty1848 Posted February 25, 2012 Author Posted February 25, 2012 Yeah one of my professors in undergrad did her postdoc at MIT. Unfortunately I dont have the credentials for those kinds of schools, but maybe once I prove myself in graduate school. Has anyone on this site been accepted to G Tech's HistSci program that you guys recall?
Riotbeard Posted February 25, 2012 Posted February 25, 2012 I don't have the traditional credential either, but if I were you, I would still send in an app. to at least one or two dream schools at least when you apply for the PhD. Not sure about G. Tech on this board. There aren't many sci/tech/med people here that I know about.
New England Nat Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 If you do good work you could be taken. I have a community college degree among my credentials. And a princeton student ID. schlesinger1, TMP, Riotbeard and 1 other 2 2
Riotbeard Posted March 19, 2012 Posted March 19, 2012 My impression is that it is very, very good, but to be fair, I don't do that type of history of science.
Riotbeard Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 Antebellum U.S. medicine. Particularly how medical and scientific discourse construct race and how this affected plantation medicine.
heyles Posted March 20, 2012 Posted March 20, 2012 I do history of technology in the 20th century (currently in a traditional US history program). I've met some grad students from UPenn's program at various conferences, and sounds like a great department. They were pretty cool, too. Might be worth checking out.
kotov Posted March 21, 2012 Posted March 21, 2012 I got into Georgia Tech's HST program, but ended up not going for a variety of reasons. I would have been researching either Soviet agricultural history or Polish aviation history. Opted to go a different route. Also, they had no funding for me even though I was apparently like their #1 choice.
