Has anyone heard anything? I have a special investment in this school not only because I love the program, but because it's close to home and, I'll admit it, the thought of moving back to FL from NY makes my wallet sing with joy.

I'm hearing crickets, too. I think they're notorious for getting back to their applicants really late in the year.

I haven't heard anything yet, but some brave soul posted on the Results Survey: "I was mostly looking for an excuse to call, it's true, but I talked to the admin assistant to see if they received my application fee. I found out official letters are being posted probably today or tomorrow. We should be hearing next week at the earliest."

From my graduate coordinator, "When I spoke to my contact at UF last week, she said that the acceptances hadn't gone out yet and she thought that the rejections went out first." This was from two days ago. I know it's not super helpful, but I thought I would throw it out there.

Creative writing acceptances and waitlists have gone out according to someone who got accepted a few days ago (source: facebook group).

They notified creative writing by phone, but I know it's probably different for the rest of the English department.

I'm going to assume myself rejected for now.

I applied last year and they played the most obnoxious waiting game. They had a colossal waiting list and they didn't notify most people until late March or early April that they'd officially been taken off the list. And judging from the replies on here, everyone got told "you're high on the list."

This. Last year I was told that I was "pretty high" on the waitlist which, in the end, seemed to be more of a consolation prize than it was an actual waitlist (see: wastelist). In their defense, however, all of their first-round offers (of which there were only 8 for literature) were accepted by the students--so perhaps that blind-sided them. In any event, I would be rather pleased to be accepted. Good luck to all of you!

I am very frustrated with Florida. I emailed the grad office person (the person they list on the website) over 3 weeks ago to make sure all of my materials were received, and I got no response. Then about a week ago, I finally emailed the DGS and told them the situation and stated that I hadn't head back from the office person, and the DGS never emailed me back, either. I know I should just call, but at this point, I feel like it's a little late to make sure they have all of my materials....Grrr....

I don't mean to add to anybody's anxiety, but my thesis adviser told me that last year, one of the M.A. students at our school applied to the Ph.D. program at Florida and they never informed him until well after the deadline, when he inquired about the status of his app, that some of his materials never arrived, so they didn't even consider his application. They are definitely not the best school when it comes to staying on top of keeping in touch with their applicants.

I had also heard that, which is why I inquired about a month ago to make sure they had everything. I kept waiting for them to respond, but I feel like, at this point, it would be fruitless to check since they most likely have already made their decisions, right?

Well now I'm going to go batty waiting to hear from them, suspecting all the while that my application is actually incomplete...

Anyone want to claim that rejection? I thought UF sent everything in the mail, so I'm wondering if this is a new thing or what...

Looks like last year they notified through a mixture of email, post, and phone, no? But I'm also curious about the rejection just posted.

I wasn't the M.A. rejection, but I just got rejected via email. Very generic form letter telling me that it was impossible to offer specific feedback. Gee, thanks.

Bum deal, Database. Was the e-mail from Dr. Wegner? Was it unsolicited?

Posted

I would assume that any email would be unsolicited since I have emailed TWICE in the last 3-4 weeks and have gotten no response.

Also, I just wanted to note that there seems to be several rejections on the board today.....Wonder what that means for those of us who haven't heard anything.

It was unsolicited. The email was authored by Dr. Wegner, but sent out by Kathy Williams, the graduate program assistant. This is what it said in totality:

Dear [Applicant]:

The Admissions and Awards Committee met early in late February to consider your application to the PhD program in English at the University of Florida.

I am sorry to inform you that we are unable to offer you admission to our program. We again this year received a very high number of applicants, many of whom had exceptional qualifications for graduate study. We were only able to admit a small percentage of applicants from this strong group.

The five members of the Committee reviewed your file independently and then reconsidered your file in a group meeting. The Committee paid special attention to your writing sample, your letters of recommendation, and your statement of purpose. Please keep these facts in mind should you desire to reapply in the future. Further advice on successful applications and requirements can be found on our department website; please read carefully our requirements for application and our Advice for Prospective Applicants http://web.english.ufl.edu/programs/grad/advice.html Unfortunately, the sheer number of applications prevents specific comments on your application.

I wish you well in the pursuit of your education and your career.

Sincerely,

Phillip Wegner
