ridgey Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Now we can wait anxiously away from the rest of the world, who aren't sure whether public health means nursing or social work  Though I think the WHO definition of health makes it legitimate to consider anything, including any academic endeavour, as being in the domain of public health. Anyway. Has anyone else heard NOTHING yet? Convinced themselves they'll get in NOWHERE?
gracecao Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Yay!!! Great! NOTHING here, not convinced to get in NOWHERE, but scared...
Dreams Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Still waiting on my fate at one school. Let's hope they hurry up
Rutabaga Posted February 12, 2009 Posted February 12, 2009 Yay! Um, 2nd interview tonight with a school to remain nameless (for now). waaah!
texasgrad Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Alright, our own forum! We're too multidisciplinary to be stuck in social sciences (or where ever we were posting before). Perchance, did anyone else apply to Univ of Washington's Public Health Genetics program (masters or PhD)?
ec86 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Still waiting.......................................................... :|
jay Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Finally I don't need to go hunting all over the board to find my Public Health friends. Also waiting
ridgey Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Yay! Um, 2nd interview tonight with a school to remain nameless (for now). waaah! Good luck for your interview! Even though my powers of deduction tell me your interview means I am rejected...
ridgey Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Congratulations to whoever got the JHU acceptance! Of course, now I'm going to be checking even more frequently than the every 7 minutes I've been doing so far...
ridgey Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 What? JHU acceptance? There have neen two: one Mental Health and one International Health. I assume each department at Bloomberg is making their decisions completely independently so this doesn't indicate when decisions in my dept wil be made. Still, it feels closer...
ec86 Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 The epi dept. is sending out their decision in a week or so! Any idea how competitive JHU is compared to other big schools of pub. health like Columbia or Harvard? Just as a side note, the wikipedia page on Harvard School of Pub. Health states that they receive 10,000 applicants a year, of which 4.5% are offered admission... seriously? 10k!!!??? There have neen two: one Mental Health and one International Health. I assume each department at Bloomberg is making their decisions completely independently so this doesn't indicate when decisions in my dept wil be made. Still, it feels closer...
Rutabaga Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 That sounds like it might be wrong! How many people are even in the Dept? Assuming not everyone accepted (so maybe 150 people decline) that would still put the Dept around 300 new admits every year!

Here are the stats they report for 07-08: http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/about/enrollment-degrees/ Anything to keep me from working on my manuscripts.

Assuming not everyone accepted (so maybe 150 people decline) that would still put the Dept around 300 new admits every year! They offer a LOT of degrees though. Three versions of the MSc (or whatever notation Harvard uses) alone. Two other Masters degrees and two doctoral. That's just on the school's page; I looked at one department (Environmental Health, just randomly) and they offer different specialisations in the MSc. And there are what, 10 departments?
gracecao Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Harvard Public Health is really big!! more than twice as Columbia. They offer a LOT of degrees though. texasgrad Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Any idea how competitive JHU is compared to other big schools of pub. health like Columbia or Harvard? JHU is competitive... all of the top 5 schools of public health are pretty competitive. Are you looking for your MPH, or a PhD? For a master's it's considerably less so, but for PhD, all of the top schools are going to get many more applications than spots to fill (i.e. I think Emory Epi PhD program get 100 apps for around 5 spots each year).
gracecao Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I remembered that I spoke to admission people from Harvard about their rate in Epi PhD at 2007 APHA, they said they would take 1 out of 4. I guess it also depends on field, for example in epi, infectious disease is always more competitive than chronic. ec86 Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 1 out of 4? That's similar to Columbia. I'm surprised that HSPH isn't more selective. Why is Yale so competitive? Over 200 applicants and only 5 matriculating... I remembered that I spoke to admission people from Harvard about their rate in Epi PhD at 2007 APHA, they said they would take 1 out of 4. Yale's 5/200 is across the whole school of Public Health; I think there are 5 departments altogether. Last year a post on the results board said they didn't admit anyone in my department, Health Policy. It could be that each department admits a max of 1? Re: Columbia 1 in 4 - the department I applied to is far more competitive. When I spoke to someone mid last year (pre-economic collapse), I was told that department planned to take 7 this round, and they had had between 90 and 100 aplicants each year for the past 3 years. I was surprised by Michigan - their website suggests they take 10/50-60.

Woah, you're right... and they have five divisions in the school that offer PhD programs. If 5 matriculate, then let's say they admit 10 in total, that's still only 2 per division. Is this the most competitive school in terms of PhD? The only other school I know of with low admit rate is Emory PhD Epi with 100 applicants for 5 spots.

I like the idea of 199 apps being distributed among the fours depts I'm not applying to, and mine being the only app in my dept. Unlikely, I know... I just want one acceptance, anywhere. The waiting is making me crazy!
ec86 Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 This week could be the week!! But in reality, I expect to hear back from at least two school in the last week of February. Baaaaaaaaaa!!!
ridgey Posted February 16, 2009 Author Posted February 16, 2009 This week could be the week!! But in reality, I expect to hear back from at least two school in the last week of February. Baaaaaaaaaa!!! Based on past years, I'm expecting to hear from JHU this week. Though my last prediction in that regard was wrong, so who knows? JHU is the acceptance I want the most. I waver between being certain I'll be admitted and certain I'll be rejected with a letter personalised because the standard rejection letter wouldn't convey how much of a joke they found my applciation
ec86 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Don't be so negative! *sigh* another day gone... but one day closer to next week!
