Now we can wait anxiously away from the rest of the world, who aren't sure whether public health means nursing or social work  Though I think the WHO definition of health makes it legitimate to consider anything, including any academic endeavour, as being in the domain of public health.

Anyway. Has anyone else heard NOTHING yet? Convinced themselves they'll get in NOWHERE?

What? JHU acceptance?

There have neen two: one Mental Health and one International Health. I assume each department at Bloomberg is making their decisions completely independently so this doesn't indicate when decisions in my dept wil be made. Still, it feels closer...

The epi dept. is sending out their decision in a week or so! :D

Any idea how competitive JHU is compared to other big schools of pub. health like Columbia or Harvard? Just as a side note, the wikipedia page on Harvard School of Pub. Health states that they receive 10,000 applicants a year, of which 4.5% are offered admission... seriously? 10k!!!???

That sounds like it might be wrong! How many people are even in the Dept? Assuming not everyone accepted (so maybe 150 people decline) that would still put the Dept around 300 new admits every year!

Here are the stats they report for 07-08:

Anything to keep me from working on my manuscripts.

They offer a LOT of degrees though. Three versions of the MSc (or whatever notation Harvard uses) alone. Two other Masters degrees and two doctoral. That's just on the school's page; I looked at one department (Environmental Health, just randomly) and they offer different specialisations in the MSc. And there are what, 10 departments?

Harvard Public Health is really big!! more than twice as Columbia.

JHU is competitive... all of the top 5 schools of public health are pretty competitive. Are you looking for your MPH, or a PhD? For a master's it's considerably less so, but for PhD, all of the top schools are going to get many more applications than spots to fill (i.e. I think Emory Epi PhD program get 100 apps for around 5 spots each year).

I remembered that I spoke to admission people from Harvard about their rate in Epi PhD at 2007 APHA, they said they would take 1 out of 4.

I guess it also depends on field, for example in epi, infectious disease is always more competitive than chronic.

1 out of 4? That's similar to Columbia. I'm surprised that HSPH isn't more selective. Why is Yale so competitive? Over 200 applicants and only 5 matriculating...

Yale's 5/200 is across the whole school of Public Health; I think there are 5 departments altogether. Last year a post on the results board said they didn't admit anyone in my department, Health Policy. It could be that each department admits a max of 1?

Re: Columbia 1 in 4 - the department I applied to is far more competitive. When I spoke to someone mid last year (pre-economic collapse), I was told that department planned to take 7 this round, and they had had between 90 and 100 aplicants each year for the past 3 years.

I was surprised by Michigan - their website suggests they take 10/50-60.

Woah, you're right... and they have five divisions in the school that offer PhD programs. If 5 matriculate, then let's say they admit 10 in total, that's still only 2 per division. Is this the most competitive school in terms of PhD? The only other school I know of with low admit rate is Emory PhD Epi with 100 applicants for 5 spots.

It would depend on the distirbution of applicants. I like the idea of 199 apps being distributed among the fours depts I'm not applying to, and mine being the only app in my dept. Unlikely, I know...

I just want one acceptance, anywhere. The waiting is making me crazy!

This week could be the week!! But in reality, I expect to hear back from at least two school in the last week of February. Baaaaaaaaaa!!!

Based on past years, I'm expecting to hear from JHU this week. Though my last prediction in that regard was wrong, so who knows?

JHU is the acceptance I want the most. I waver between being certain I'll be admitted and certain I'll be rejected with a letter personalised because the standard rejection letter wouldn't convey how much of a joke they found my applciation
