I applied to NYU (magazine) and Columbia. Heard back from NYU yesterday - phone call from director and followup email. I had previously been in touch with her by phone and email as she had contacted me earlier in the month. Also found out I got a scholarship of a little more than 1/3 of the tuition, which I am very excited about. Possibly because I'm an international student? (Canadian). Now waiting to hear back from Columbia.

I applied to NYU, Columbia, USC, Northwestern, Syracuse, University ofTexas at Austin, UNC, CUNY and BU. ( a lot!)

So far heard back from NWU, UT-Austin, UNC and BU. Got into them :)

Not heard a word from NYU, so I think that means a rejection is on its way :( I hope not though.

Skype interview with USC tomorrow.

No word from any others either.

Applied: USC, Medill, NYU (Business and Economic Reporting), Columbia, CUNY

Accepted: Medill, USC

Haven't heard from any of the others.

Last year, Columbia made ALL decisions on 15th March. SOON GUYS!

coastalvintagechic, I think the interview went well, she seemed really nice and I didn't fumble at all! Haha but we'll just see now. Who knows? :)

nikim89,

That sounds great! Hope you get in!

Side note: I feel like I should have applied to Medill just to see, but I don't think I could have lived in Chicago. Is that bad reasoning?

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what acceptance rates are like for journalism programs? Also, is there a ranked list of schools? Still waiting on Columbia (like everyone else), but I wish schools would publish admissions statistics so I have an some idea of their ideal candidate.

poolsofjewels,

I know that when you visit the journalism program at Columbia they give you a packet of information and one of the pages has all the statistics of their admittance rate. I haven't really looked at it since November but I think it said that they get a little over 700 applicants and accept a little under 400 (but that is just off the top of my head, I can't say for sure--I'll look when I get home). And I think NYU has an ever smaller acceptance rate because the program is smaller. But I'm equally interested to see if there is a webpage on each school that has this information. Let me know if you find anything!

coastalvintagechic,

If you don't mind my asking, why wouldn't you want to live in Chicago? I'm an international student who will most likely end up at Medill, so I'd like to know the pros and cons of Chicago beforehand. :)

Just looked at the 2011 admissions brochure for Columbia and here are a few quick facts:

Applications for Full-Time Study 2011-2012

Master of Science

Applicants 850

Admits 396

Expected to Enroll 258

Didn't find any admissions stats on the NYU website, so it's hard to compare.

My friend told me NYU accepts about 300 people through 10 concentrations. So slightly smaller.

sooperwoman,

I actually hear from most everyone that Chicago is really pretty, and I don't doubt it. I just know that they're winters are really winters--and I don't know that I could deal with that (although realistically I probably could). I also have just really been dead set on either NY or SoCal as far as the type of reporting I want to do (entertainment related) and I don't think I'd get the same type of opportunities at Medill that I would at the other schools. That said though I still regret not applying, just to see if I could have gotten in. All in all the masters programs are only a couple years or less so it wouldn't be as though I was moving to Chicago permanently :)

All in all though it is Northwestern, so the pros FAR outweigh the cons (if there really is any).

coastalvintagechic,

yeah, coming from India, I'm seriously dreading the winters. Where I'm from, anything below 86 degrees is "winter" :D

since i plan to pursue business reporting, both chicago and NY would be great, but i'm leaning toward NY a little bit as of now.

Posted

sooperwoman,

I actually come from a place where we can get some cold, rainy winters, but I know in places like Chicago it lasts longer and in a more intensified level. It's hard enough to enjoy school when you can't really go outside--and in NY I think there's less of that because everyone is usually walking outside. I think the reason NY entices me is because there is just so much to do there and it's such a mecca for all things. I haven't visited Chicago either, so part of my reasoning for not applying was that if I got in and decided to go there I didn't want to move there and then end up not liking it--on top of having to pay such a big amount. But you're right, for business reporting either Chicago or NY would be great places! I hope I do get to visit it one day though!

coastalvintagechic,

I got an e-mail from the director. I don't think you can see it on the app. And thank you! :)

coastalvintagechic,

I've been accepted to USC, Medill, CUNY and NYU as of now. The only other place I applied to was Columbia, which I haven't heard from, but I think I'd pick NYU over it anyway. :)

sooperwoman,

I know I'm getting nervous about Columbia's results tomorrow--though I doubt I'll get in. Who knows, we may end up at NYU together next year! (Though I think you'll be in B&ER).

coastalvintagechic,

I'm sort of meh about Columbia after getting into NYU :) and yeah, maybe we will! Despite being different concentrations we'll probably have some common courses, especially in the first semester. :)
