Hunter - Community Organizing, Planning and Development

Has anyone applied to the Community Organizing, Planning and Development curriculum at Hunter? I'm curious what everyone's thoughts are on a non-clinical curriculum.

Also, from current MSW students, I've heard that it's important to fulfill requirements for potentially taking the LCSW exam in the future. I know in New York State you need 12 hours of clinical coursework in order to site for the LCSW exam. Hunter's website isn't terribly informative regarding hours/courses for any of their curriculums. Does anyone know if all programs have 12 clinical hours or how you fit in that coursework if you aren't a in the clinical curriculum?

I'm not sure if I understand the question, but from what I read on their site, you have field work 3 days per week and classes two days per week.

Also, I just found out I was accepted into COPD yesterday! I'm really excited! Anyone else preparing to start COPD this fall?

If you're planning to be licensed as a clinical social worker (LCSW), in New York State, you need 12 hours of clinical courses - this is in addition to at least 3 years of post MSW supervised experience. I realize you can probably take the courses after receiving your MSW degree if you weren't in a clinical concentration, and therefore didn't fulfill this requirement. I was wondering, specifically, if anyone knew if it is possible to fulfill the clinical coursework requirement within Hunter's COPD concentration?

This recently came up when I spoke with a friend attending Columbia; she highly recommended fulfilling the course requirement during your degree, to have the option to pursue clinical licensing in the future (more job opportunities, etc.).

frescas - I am also planning to attend Hunter (COPD concentration) this fall!

awesome! I'm making a big move to go to Hunter, from Austin TX! It looks like we have 16 courses to complete in two years plus fieldwork. my boyfriend who just finished his phd suggested I get the reading lists in advance and do as much of the reading as I can this summer. I'm going to look into that. I'm especially nervous because I think I'm going to have to work part time too. yikes!

Hi Frescas and az1,

I just got into the program as well for COPD - very excited to start this fall! I am doing the OYR option. I'm glad I read your post - I'm also hoping that I can fulfill the clinical requirements through my electives and foundation coursework while completing the COPD concentration - I will definitely call them next week to find out if this is possible!

On another note, are either of you looking for housing? i'd love to room with another hunter student. i live in astoria, queens, which I love, and may stay in my current apartment when my two roommates leave (their rooms are 600 per month and 750 per month, respectively, the second has its own bathroom) but would be open to moving to another neighborhood when my lease is up in July. Would either of you be interested in talking about potential housing options? I am a 24 year old woman working at Big Brothers Big Sisters in Manhattan, love to cook, go to the gym, and explore the city!
