biobiobioman Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Hi, Every one. What is EXACTLY the meaning of Stipened? for example 24,000 stipened. Does it include taxing, what about tuition. thanks, and what exactly is the meaning of fully funded?
contretemps Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 It's actually called stipend, not stipened. A quick google search tells you that it's like a salary for doing RA or TA work. Taxes are deducted from your stipend before it is given to you, I think. It is separate from the tuition fee which is usually free for fully funded students.
see_bella Posted March 11, 2012 Posted March 11, 2012 Agreed. Stipend is like your salary for being a TA, RA or both (GA). And yes taxes are taken off just like a 'normal' salary and you can get some back (or not) when you file your taxes. Also if they tell you tuition waiver it means you don't have to pay tuition BUT you may or may not be responsible for university fees. Some schools make it clear by telling you tuition and fees waiver. Others will say tuition waiver which could mean fees are also waived OR tuition only is waived and you pay fees once every semester (usually per credit hour).

kyjin Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 great, thank you guys. but what are fees, you mean health insurance, etc... Health insurance, lab fees, student services, athletic fees, etc. Take a look at a bill from undergrad; that'll give you an idea of the fees they throw in.
SeriousSillyPutty Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Also -- and this is secondary -- at my school they warned that, for some reason, taxes ARE NOT automatically taken out like a regular paycheck, BUT you are responsible for the taxes come April. You're supposed to fill out a thing so that you pay some taxes quarterly, I believe. Anyway, just didn't want anyone to think they're getting away tax-free when they see their first pay stub.
lewin Posted March 13, 2012 Posted March 13, 2012 Stipend could mean different things at different schools, and it's not necessarily taxable. In Canada, for example, it's taxable if they classify it as salary but not taxable if they classify it as a scholarship.

I knew the offer seemed too good to be true
NeuroGal Posted March 17, 2012 Posted March 17, 2012 In my field stipends can also refer to fellowships. I have a stipend but no teaching/RA requirements as well as full tutition coverage.
Eigen Posted March 18, 2012 Posted March 18, 2012 (edited) Stipends are usually amounts of funding that actually get payed to you, differentiated from tuition and fee remisions. Edited March 18, 2012 by Eigen
