The Etiquette of Inquiry: When and how to inquire about the status of my application?

Hey

So Im about to the point of considering inquiring about the status of my application at schools I haven't heard a peep from, though I have a serious complex that makes me reluctant to annoy or bother people about such matters. At what point (how many weeks after the applications were due/or from when they told you they would inform you) have ya'll sent inquiries, and in what form? Did you call or email? And whom did you contact?

Also if anyone happens to have an example-inquiry with polished rhetoric that you wouldn't mind sharing, that would be brilliant. Thanks

When I've sked I have just asked generally when application decisions will be revealed and they always told me the answer immediately

Funny story: I just inquired about my status at Toronto and they immediately replied with telling me I was rejected. Awesome. I'm sure my inquiry had nothing to do with it but at least I found out sooner that later. I also inquired to UVa just now and they just said you'll find out sometime between now and April.

Can you just admissions offices and say you are an applicant that is inquiring about the time-frame of when decisions will be made without giving your name? Or do you think they'll ask your name as well?

I'm not sure about how long to wait until after applications are sent in, but if there is a posted estimate as to when the decisions will be made, I would wait about two weeks after said date before inquiring.
