chenchak Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Canukgirl, I got the same email from the admission director asking whether I wanted to switch to MPA program, which I did ended up change to MPA. I guess they emailed to MPP applicants who have more than 3 yrs w/e. And, this Friday!!!, I have sweat all over me now....

Hey...okay that's good to know!!....however the poster above mentioned that they have 5 ys w/e....Do you have another masters/advanced degree?
thewaitinggame09 Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I spoke with a current student at HKS and she told me "definitely this Friday for those who get in". Take that how you will. She's not the divine authority of course, but she did seem quite certain for whatever reason. Maybe she is one of the callers?? I didn't ask (because that might put her in a delicate position of having to tell me I'm not on their lists!) She also said she was notified on March 15th last year. Good luck everyone - Friday is only two days away! No I will not be able to sleep for the next 2 days. Good Luck to everyone
chenchak Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Yep, I did have an MBA degree. Maybe that's why... I heard this year's MPA2 applications do not increase as much as other programs( slightly increased indeed), that's one good news for us Huhhh, I think I'll be spending my time the rest of this week in this board...

You got that right. I think I will be doing the same. Good thing the boss is out of town this week. 8)
javajava Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 For those who got the email asking whether they wanted to switch over from the MPP applicant pool to the MPA applicant pool (presumably because you have sufficient work experience) --> can you elaborate about the kind of work experience you have? Was your experience public/social sector-focused? The reason I ask is because I have 6 years of work experience but I'm "new" to the public/social sector and only have a bachelor's (and no grad level coursework of a relevant nature). I guess I am just trying to reassure myself that it's ok that I have not been notified like you all have...

I guess I am just trying to reassure myself that it's ok that I have not been notified like you all have... I have worked for the government in Ontario and I also currently work for a top ranked consulting firm (global ranking), where one of my huge clients is the provincial government in Canada. I also am a volunteer advisor/consultant for a globally recognized NGO, where I deal with public policy. I also worked for a Canada's largest telecomunications company as Sr. Policy Analyst- dealing with Ethical Standards- among other things. Don't worry, just because we were asked if we wnated to switch does not mean anything. I thought it may have when I first posted here, but come to think of it really dosn't- the admissions people were just doning their jobs.
chenchak Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I have 3 years working purely in private sector side, and 2 years work experience with lots of public policy related matters. But I've been involved with politic from time to time for 3 years, but that's not full time position... By the way, I 'm Thai from Thailand...And all of my work experience are in Thailand and South East Asia
chenchak Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 Yep, after 3 years of works, I went to one quite wellknown B-school in US and received an MBA...

linden Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 sisepuede: I wouldn't freak out if you did not receive this request. In addition to more than three years of work experience, the program's requirements include an advanced degree or some graduate-level work.

Well I got a Graduate Certificate (18 Graduate Hours) and they never asked to switch me. Plus I got 5 years of work experience and counting. I guess they want more folks of math/stat/finance background according to the Harvard Website :?
javajava Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 thanks for elaborating about the email that some of you got re: switching from MPP to MPA. And thanks to others for your reassurances. I have to say, this wait is killing me a bit more than you others..because here in India its already Wed night...and so I'm going to have to wait till my Friday night/Sat morning before I have a chance of hearing from HKS. heh.

Very true..in addition to all my expirence I have an MBA in Finance and several courses in Econ, Stats and others that are already indcuded in the MPP.....so that's why I was probably asked if I wanted to switch....
applicant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 What time do you think the mails will actually go out?

Hey, I'm no different from u. I'm in Thailand, 2 hrs earlier than India. I've been jumping off the bed to check email for 4 days already...
applikant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I have been reading silently for the past few days but the suspense is too intense to stay quiet.. Any MPA-ID/MBA candidates out there?
DaveinDC Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 applikant- Ditto on observing and now getting sucked in. I was applying to the joint MPA-ID/MBA program with HBS - but then I got rejected from HBS. Did you get in? Congrats if so. I sent HKS an email expressing my continued interest in the MPA-ID despite HBS's rejection, but I'm not sure how they'll take it.
applikant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I applied R2 so still waiting to hear. I did get an interview and it went pretty well, so we'll see. Did you interview? I heard there are 20+ people who got into HBS in R1 and were applicants for the joint degree.
DaveinDC Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 20+? Wow. Is that for people applying to the MPA-ID joint degree, or for HKS joint degrees across the board? No, I didn't even get an interview. It's okay, I never really wanted to go to HBS right? That's what I keep telling myself at least.
applikant Posted March 11, 2009 Posted March 11, 2009 I think the 20+ is just for the MPA-ID, unfortunately.. But I don't think that means much. HBS accepts ~900 people, ~400 of them in R1, so 20 is a not a huge number. I visited HBS a while ago and I overheard people discussing whether applying to a joint degree would help them differentiate themselves and increase their chances of getting into HBS.. So I would be surprised if all of the 20+ admits are "serious" HKS candidates.. Or at least let's hope so
fes_alum Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 For those of you waiting to hear from the Kennedy School, it will likely be later than sooner. If anyone saw the Harvard Crimson on March 4, you will know that MPP applications at the Kennedy School are up 34% this year so decisions may take a bit longer than usual (but definitely before Apirl 1). You can read the Crimson article on HKS applications at: http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=526930 Good luck to all those who applied!

Ahh, since MPA2's application increases "slightly", I hope the decision can come sooner. If I have to wait until April 1st, I'd definitely get dehydrated to death because of sweating everyday for another 2 weeks. BTW, Does anyone know whether the rejection come out at the same time or later than the acceptance email?
javajava Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 It's officially Friday where I am (India). An answer either way is my ticket to a peaceful weekend..
