starmaker
Did anyone else apply to this? The website says that the winners will be notified in mid to late March. Has anyone heard?
anacron
I applied but haven't heard back. Perhaps sometime this week if they stick to their schedule.

anacron
I emailed one of the program coordinators and got the following news: Dear anacron, We will be notifying applicants early to mid April and will let the awardees know when we need their acceptance decision. vertices and DrChops
starmaker
It would be nice if they stuck to their posted timeline. These fellowship programs don't seem to understand that winning or not winning could influence someone's actual choice of program, which is due by 4/15. Yes, definitely agree. However, I do wonder whether these delays are because they are gov't funded and depends on budgeting and cost projections. This may explain the tendency for notifications to be delayed until April (around tax deadline).
TheRisingSun
I'm pretty nervous, this is a pretty great fellowship. Extremely slim chances though: < 4%.

TheRisingSun
Wait, did you get it? There are only ~20 winners, I"m sure it wouldn't take them too long to call all of them.
ana3a
Wait, did you get it? There are only ~20 winners, I"m sure it wouldn't take them too long to call all of them. I heard they call the winners, and everybody else gets a rejection email. I also thought it was ~20 winners, based on winner rosters in past years. It doesn't seem to me like they call all the winners at once, though. I called Krell yesterday, and they implied they weren't sure they would finish contacting the winners this week. All seems strange to me. Is there so much deliberation from one winner to the next?
Aetius
I have not heard any news, so I called Krell today. I happened to ask whether any notifications had gone out, and the secretary said that she did not think so. One of my professors thought that I would be a good fit for this, but the odds are terrible; according to one source I've found, last year's acceptance rate was 2.7%, following a historical pattern of consistent decline. I'm trying to keep my expectations low, but hope is a motherfusser.
intirb
my deadline to accept/decline the fellowship is april 13th. my guess is that they won't send out rejections (or acceptances!) to people on the waiting list until after that date. but.. given that the deadline is so soon, my guess is that they've contacted the first round of people already. sorry Edited April 4, 2012 by intirb
starmaker
Are people getting calls still? My phone is busted and undergoing repairs right now, so I wouldn't even know if they called me.
Kimmo
got a phone call today!  so excited! Mind posting what number you got a call from? I got a few calls the last few days but I don't pick up unless I recognize the number. And my voicemail is broken.

dshave
Just got a rejection email: Thank you for your interest in and your application to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Computational Science Graduate Fellowship program. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer you a DOE CSGF fellowship. We received a large number of very highly qualified applications and we are able to fund only a small percentage of them. We were very impressed with your credentials and saw much promise in your application and we strongly encourage you to reapply next year provided you remain eligible. We hope that you will continue to pursue academic and career goals in the area of computational science. If your research interests include the need for high end computing tools and resources, you may want to visit the SciDAC Outreach center, a clearinghouse for activities and resources associated with the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing program funded by the Department of Energy. You can find information about the SciDAC Outreach center here: https://outreach.scidac.gov/ Please note there will be a change in the eligibility requirements for the 2013 application. Only undergraduate seniors, graduate students who have not yet matriculated into a PhD program, and first year Ph.D. students will be eligible to apply for the 2013 DOE CSGF program; we will no longer accept applications from Ph.D. students in their second year at the time of application. Again, we thank you for taking the time to apply to the program. With best regards, Mary Ann Leung, PhD DOE CSGF Program Manager

anacron
man... no luck with fellowships. I received the "We were very impressed with your credentials" email, so hopefully next year with a much improved application.
vertices
No luck here either. A presentation I went to on this fellowship did say it was difficult for computer science students and most of the winners in memory had very strong ties to a specific other-science application. anacron
A presentation I went to on this fellowship did say it was difficult for computer science students and most of the winners in memory had very strong ties to a specific other-science application. If I understand the aim of the fellowship correctly - it effectively knocks out CS students who's work does not directly benefit 'real science'. This seems to be substantiated by past CS winners who are (primarily) in the field of parallel computing/scientific computing.
