I can also relate to the feelings of anxiety over this grant. Pursuing other opportunities at the same time, exercising, reading and spending time with friends has helped me somewhat.

However... reading that results would come out next THURSDAY made me jump a little. I thought first round results weren't coming until January 31? What is the source of the earlier notification date?

kbui, I read your blog a little since although I am applying to China for Fulbright, one of my alternate opportunities is in Taiwan and I am interested in learning about the experiences of others. In my admittedly unqualified opinion, you really embody the spirit of the Fulbright program and I hope you are able to fulfill your goal of being an ETA :)

Ruluo, This is purely an educated guess, but...  I assume that the reviewers do not see the demographic information sheet. Nonetheless, applicants from under-represented ethnic groups might, for example, bring up their ethnicity when telling an anecdote about dealing with cultural differences in their statement of purpose and it could be a plus if it shows cultural adaptability. However, I suspect the real factor is geographic diversity, which is explicitly stated as a preference factor on the Fulbright website:

http://us.fulbrightonline.org/about/factors-in-selection

I just saw a post asking about interviews. I marked myself as "Interview - Yes" because I had an on-campus interview with my university back in October. I haven't had an interview with anyone from IIE/Fulbright. Hope there wasn't any confusion.

Thanks! This really means a lot to me. I hope we all hear back good news in the next couple weeks. Let's keep our fingers crossed! Either that or pray to all the deities you know and hope that one of them is watching out for you. Personally, I'm going to Mary Magdalene.

My campus adviser doesn't seem to be in "the know." I wish my school was more involved in the whole process so I could've gotten some inside details.

Ugh, gosh, yes!

One thing I've always been curious about is if certain schools such as Ivy League, public schools, etc, are only allowed a specific number of Fulbright awards. For the past 4 years, my school has had 1 Fulbright scholar. I wonder: is it because of the name of the school and the quality of the student or do some schools have faculty that know exactly how the student should sell himself/herself to the NSC.

Only a few weeks left, guys!! Aah so excited/nervous. I've gotten into one of the us grad schools I applied to already, but obviously this is my top choice.

From what I've read about past notifications, I'm guessing we could find out next Thursday, the 17th (like a few of you all have already said!) Here's to hoping that is the case! Good luck everyone! This wait is the worst, I can only imagine how terrible the wait for the second round notifications will be for those of us who are lucky enough to move on!

From what I've seen, I think some schools know EXACTLY what they are looking for. I accidentally came upon a school's directions to faculty, explaining how best to write a letter of recommendation for the fulbright- with very detailed do's and dont's. So it appeared that to them, it was not just about training the students to write good applications, but training their faculty on how to best assist them as well.

Then I read someone's complete fulbright application, including the letters of recommendation AND the FPA's assessment of her application! The university actually PRE-rated the strength of her application for the fulbright committee. It said that although it is possible that you could have a low university score and still get through the first round, it is very unlikely. Crazy! Imagine going through your university to apply for a grant only to realize they pre-rejected you! I think that you don't generally find out how they rate you... Tis application was an exception since she did receive one. So, I think they were using it as an example..

Wow! Well thinking back on the nice things my FPA's said about my application makes me feel good then.

Hello all!

I am an ETA applicant to Poland for the 2013-2014 year.

I'm super nervous and excited to find out whether we made it into the finals later this month.

Just wanted to join in on the discussion!

Found it! Page 17 of the file, I think. There's a big "10" at the top right of the page and it says "campus committee evaluation form."

Yeah, my university has an extremely intense and thorough application process. (And it obviously works, because we get a loooot of Fulbrighters every year) Looking back, I'm not even sure how I managed to do it all while working fulltime and commuting, but I'm sure my application was much stronger because of it! I am definitely hoping for the best.

I am a Fulbright Alternate from last year, applying again this year. If you are lucky to get past the first cut, the second waiting is even worse. For me, they said... well, you could get notified any time between now (April) and until September, if someone drops out. I also have applied to the Whitaker, which is the Fulbright for Biomedical Engineers. Waiting is painful, I always remind myself that things happen for a reason. Everyone put in a application and there is nothing we can change at this point. Good luck to everyone!

Last year, I went to drop off my application to the Whitaker to be mailed. It was a few days before we got the notification for the Fulbright. From what I can tell, campus advisors might already know. They have the ability to log-in and look. For obvious reasons, they must wait until we receive the email to say anything! Its a little frustrating but necessary.

What's with the delay in telling us!

I think they have to wait. I am sure it is an ethical thing. They probably sign something or agree that they will wait for an official announcement. By the time I finish this process I would have put in over 2 years of waiting. Lol, I try to keep myself busy with other things.

i really want to email the IIE program manager for my country about the ETA on the Emailssssss. Is that a crazy/bad idea?

Also has anyone else looked at the statistics for thier country on Fulbrights website and crunched the numbers? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who's obsessive from time to time. https://us.fulbrightonline.org/statistics

Its not a bad idea, they dont affect the outcomes. As long as the email is polite. I guarantee it will be, "By the end of January" for the answer. I have crunched the numbers for my country, it was about the same as the year before. Not sure if that is promising or not.

Ya, I already did right after I posted that. I was super polite ;) Where are you applying to? I'm applying for a full research grant to India.

The topic area is Gender Studies. My proposal is to study the social and emotional impacts of gender disparity on young women living in a rural district/village in Rajasthan. This district has some of the highest rates of illiteracy, and lowest enrollment rates for girls in primary school, and especially in secondary school the enrollment rates drop. I proposed to develop focus groups using participatory action research to encourage student involvement on having a discussion about what are the causes (which there is a wide range) that limit female students from continuing on to high school, explore their perceptions of gender norms in Indian culture/society, working together to find ways to go on to higher education and reduce drop-out rates etc. There will be use of journal writing, photography and video documentation that will support my publication to an international academic journal and will expand on current literature around the issues of women's empowerment, education and international development, conflict resolution, gender equality, etc.. I have a host affiliate that is an NGO called Educate Girls where I did my graduate practicum work in Summer 2011. Why India? I fell in LOVE with this country and with the young women that I worked with. I learned so much from them (as well as the other NGO I interned at prior to EG) that when I left after three months I felt I could have stayed even longer and learn a lifetime's worth of knowledge based on the women's experience. I knew that I had to go back. That's why I applied. I wanted to continue giving back to this specific group of young women that I felt such a strong connection to. I have been studying Hindi since returning from that trip to further enhance my ability to communicate with the students. Like so many of you all, I really want this!

What's your proposal all about ?! I truly love hearing about everyone's project. There is so many diverse and unique opportunities for research and reading about everyone's passion is such a wonderful part of this process!!!
