If a program does not explicitly request one to explain why they want to go to this specific program in the SOP, then would one have to include.it? None of my apps explicitly say it, but I was going to talk about it anyway. However, for some of the programs I don't have much to work with as their websites don't really boast good things about their programs. I chose my schools based on how far away from home they are and how good the program seemed to be. Should I mention that?

I would not include the location as a reason why you are applying. I'm applying to schools in Southern Calfornia, but they don't need to know that I'm geographically limiting myself. You can mention a topic that a few professors cover and say that this program is strong in X topic. I think it is a good idea to include why you chose these programs.

What's important to you in a grad school? The website isn't the only source of information about a school, they have entire departments devoted to admissions. Call them up and ask for a brochure. Set up an informational phone appt with an admissions person and ask them the questions you'd like to know the answers to. Just because it's a good program doesn't necessarily mean it's a good program for you... it's good to answer this in an sop, but even better to know for yourself.

I wouldn't mention geographical location or general reputation as a reason for picking the school. They know their reputation, and geography isn't a compelling reason to let you in.
