mph33 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 are you out of province? if so let me know what you're doing with the residence stuff. Yes I am out of province, but have yet to look into housing arrangements. I'll let you know when I look into it further! What are you thinking of doing?
afzal_11 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Yes I am out of province, but have yet to look into housing arrangements. I'll let you know when I look into it further! What are you thinking of doing? I'm not sure, but I'll probably stay on campus. College quarter looks really nice, but its apartment style and its a bit of walk to the health science side of campus (which could be a big problem when its snowing).
mph33 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I also got accepted. Do you know when the deadline is to accept the offer? Also, when do classes start? Congrats! I'm not sure when the deadline is, but I have already accepted haha The recommendation letter had said we begin in August for that course, but I don't actually know the exact date. I think the letter in the mail will have more information.

Fyi -> College quarter is only open to undergrad students btw
Loren26 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Has anyone received a rejection from Queens yet?? I've heard back from everywhere except there!!
guruginni Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Me too!! So excited. I will be accepting the offer so perhaps I will see you in August! Hey!! I got the same email too.. Accepted online... God willing.. Will see you guys in August
torontoMPH Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Hey guys, Just wanted to say that if you got accepted into multiple places you should try to decide as quickly as possible so that others who are on the waitlist can have a chance to get in. I know its a tough decision but some of us are in a worse position than you! lol123 1
torontoMPH Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Has anyone received a rejection from Queens yet?? I've heard back from everywhere except there!! Might mean you are on the waiting list, I just called them and found out that I am on it. Did you get in anywhere else?
torontoMPH Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Can anyone weigh in on the benefits of an MSc in epidemiology versus an MPH? I applied to both programs at Queens, and got accepted. The deadline to offer epidemiology was tomorrow but since they told me on April 17, they have agreed to an extension. I understand that they're different paths, one obviously research oriented and en route to PhD but if anyone has any personal experiences relating to this or if they are in the programs, I would really appreciate if you could share. Thank you so much! The MSc in Epi is more research based and more focused on a specific project rather than a multi disciplinary array of courses. If I were you I would take the MSc, it is more prestigious than an MPH and you will have more opportunities and job prospects with it. Just my opinion. I think I am going to apply to it next year if I don't get into any where this year.
E_gradforum Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 E_gradforum, do you live in Toronto? I am in Ottawa
ohhellothere Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I am in Ottawa Gah, I live in the GTA and have yet to receive my letter of acceptance.
healthnuts Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Just accepted Toronto's Health Promo offer. Rejected Queens HP yesterday and will be rejecting Alberta HP today so a few spots should open up!
Loren26 Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Might mean you are on the waiting list, I just called them and found out that I am on it. Did you get in anywhere else? Hey, I emailed Queens today and was told that my application is 'on hold' and the final decision depends on how many people accept the initial offers.... I'm not sure if that even means anything. Were you told something similar? And thankfully I've been accepted to Waterloo.

Thank you so much! Definitely take the MSc! Huge range of job opportunities will open up for you. I've also heard from a student who just finished there 1st year in the Msc program at queens and she completely loves it. She said that it sets you up with a strong skill set that can be applied to a variety of areas afterwards...MPH will give you some Epi skills too, but its very broad. I have also heard from an a Epi prof at OttawaU who says that it can sometimes be difficult for students entering directly from undergrad to the MPH program to find jobs afterwards because they dont have as much 'real world' healthcare experience. (I dont know if thats your situation or not though.) He was saying how initially the MPH program was developed for nurses and docs to upgrade their skills, but now theres this trend allowing in undergrads. I should probably mention though that even with this stuff being said I still accepted an offer to Guelph's MPH program (didnt apply to any epi programs because i felt i didnt have the stats background to be competitive enough to get in). I am an undergrad, but I decided that even if it takes me sometime to find a job, I'm fine with just trying to do internships either in Canada or abroad to get more 'real world' experience. Best of luck in September with whatever you decide!
uoftmph Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 I've JUST received an acceptance email for the UofT MPH - Epidemiology program with Global Health Emphasis. My status online hasn't changed (stil 'under review'). I was starting to worry because I haven't been getting any updates from the program and I haven't been receiving any generic emails (re: open house or housing). I will be accepting this offer! Good luck to everyone still waiting!

Good luck to everyone still waiting! Congrats! Quick question: will you be accepting your admission into the global health emphasis? I was admitted as well and am wondering if the lack of established practicum placements and support in finding international placements makes you wary as it did me. I'm still interested in accepting it though!
mpherrr Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 Thank you so much for the advice! I really, really appreciate it. Unfortunately, I ended up declining because they didn't end up extending the deadline and I wasn't ready to commit to it without being completely sure about it. Also, I recieved an email from uoft epidemiology today as well, to complicate matters. Definitely take the MSc! Huge range of job opportunities will open up for you. I suppose the second round will go out in May for spots that were refused from this round of offers.
mpherrr Posted April 25, 2013 Posted April 25, 2013 To those of you who were just accepted into UofT epi with the global health emphasis, did you recieve a formal email about epi? I recieved an email from Dr. Jackson congratulating me on acceptance to epi and to tell me i got into the global health emphasis and I emailed back to ask her when the deadline to accept is because I havent actually recieved an email from Uoft Epi yet...and she apologized saying I need to wait for that letter first and that I was recommended for admission. Is this only me? Very confused..
deletta Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 Any incoming U of T MPHers looking for a (great) roommate?
uoftmph Posted April 26, 2013 Posted April 26, 2013 (edited) I got an email from the Global Health admin team first, and got another email from the Epi department the next day.
