Morning all.

I wanted to get your take on EndNote version X6. I'm currently using a 30-day trial and am liking it a lot, but there is a deal through my university system where I can pick it up for $110, and I'm worried it will disappear soon. I obviously haven't had time to send EndNote through the grinder, and probably won't before I need to make a decision. Since it retails at three times this amount, I don't want the chance to slip away if it's worthwhile.

Because of that, I wanted to get the take of experienced users of EndNote, particularly those going down the history or international relations/political science road. What do you like/not like about it? How does it stand up to Zotero and Mendeley?

(I am aware of the thread from a couple months ago comparing the three, but the new update could potentially change things).

Thanks in advance for your time.

Don't worry about the deal expiring, that's the traditional education price. You can usually get it straight from the company for that with proof of an educational status. You can also usually get it from Amazon for $105-$115.

I haven't upgraded from X2, but I will probably switch to X6 sometime this year.

I've used Zotero before and prefer Endnote to it. Endnote is easy to use, powerful, and flexible. Zotero and Mendeley both will do the job though... I think that a lot of it comes down to personal preference these days. Zotero used to lack what I still see as Endnote's "killer feature" -- Cite While You Write -- but it seems like Zotero has that capability these days from what I can tell... I used Endnote X4 and absolutely love it. I have no plans to switch to another platform and won't be upgrading to X6 anytime soon either because there doesn't seem to have been all that much of a change...!

Actually, Eigen, I would be curious to know what it is about the features in X6 that would convince you to upgrade from X2!

Mostly? Ability to annotate PDFs in the program, as well as the ability to pull metadata from PDFs.

Those may be things that are in X4, though.

And neither of them are a big deal, just would be convenient.

Also, while I can get X2 through my department, my wife's department doesn't have it. So if I get a copy of X6, I can upgrade and we can both use it.

I'm on the X6 trial right now, coming from X4. Its sharp.

While nothing ground breaking, those small conveniences sure do add up. I like having a one-stop-shop for organization + cite while you write.
