I saw that someone recently posted an update on the results board...but nothing regarding admissions. I'm just wondering if there are other people out there on this board that applied to this program. If so, have you heard anything yet?

All is silence after the interview weekend - I even had an email exchange with a potential adviser, but no hint as to whether or not they would make decisions soon. I think they may actually be waiting until early April. Hubris? Yes. Would I still accept if I got an offer on April 14? Couldn't say. If they're assuming that we'll automatically accept, without an admitted students weekend or anything to get to know them, that's kind of off-putting. However, I'm pretty sure I won't have that decision to make given how the interview went...

I'm not that optimistic given that I did not receive an interview. When did you have yours? And the way it sounds, it's looking like you have a pretty good chance at getting in. Best of luck!

Yeah, I think they did three interview weekends last month, with about 5 candidates at each one. I'm not sure what to make of their system; it seems like people in previous years have been rejected as early as February but accepted as late as June (I guess from the waitlist). The problem is that other programs want responses as soon as possible, and I feel really bad holding out on them. Good luck to you too - as long as you've got something else that you're excited about lined up, it seems like there's no point in any of us stressing for the next god-knows-how-long...

Just wondering - Did you end up getting accepted to HASTS? When did they let you know their final decision? The program is pretty much exactly what I want to do, but I can't figure out if I have any chance at all from the information on their website.

I'm really interested in the MIT HASTS program (applying this fall)...any idea of what it takes to gain admissions? (Apparently, they only take 5/125 applicants.)

I have (what I'd consider to be) decent academic stats:

Two masters degrees, one from an Ivy...all above 3.7 GPA

Presentation at an int'l conference

An article published in a collection of essays on Near Eastern Studies

Adjuncted 5 college classes

Fluency in a research language (Arabic, Hebrew)

(and I'm re-taking the GRE to try to break 1500...I'm also taking a class this semester from an alumna of the program in hopes of getting a good rec.)

I am concerned that I don't have much fieldwork experience (or any...actually), though I'm applying for a Fulbright to remedy this. Does anyone know how much relevant work experience plays into admissions to this program? Do I sound competitive enough? My interests revolve around international agriculture/water resources in the middle east and development sociology.

Huh, interesting. I'm at Cornell, and I take classes in the Science and Technology Studies department. My understanding is that HASTS is pretty similar, but maybe with more of an emphasis on the "history" piece. The first thing I think of when I think about STS/Sociology of Science is not so much field work, so that's an interesting approach. In STS here, and in the Anthro programs that some of the HASTS faculty come out of, the emphasis is on theory and criticism.

I would look at the journal Social Studies of Science to get a better idea of what the STS side of that program is all about.

I just noticed this because I'm peeking around here again to get more information on STS-y programs. If you have any thoughts you'd like to share about HASTS from your own experience, I'd love to hear it!

Oh, I know about STS -- I've taken graduate seminars in STS. I apologize if I was unclear. I was just wondering if anyone has spent time overseas doing anthropological fieldwork or anything of that sort (this is particularly in regards to HASTS, not applicable to where faculty seem to focus solely on History of Medicine, etc). I have only a few things (nothing significant) and I didn't know if that would be a big gap in my resume.

I don't really know anything that isn't listed on the website. I'm just researching potential programs to apply to this fall.
