they post the results online too. we shall all find out today.
  3. don't you think that's too strong of a statement? of course, luck is a big component of the admissions, but I think it's fair to say that the "quality" also plays some role.
  4. 60% of my very small cohort at a very selective program is gay. no, i don't think it's a problem at all.

I don't know the answer to you question. I would imagine that is not going to make a difference in their decision, but you can always call them up and ask in person. Here's to mid-April!
  7. Your advice is sound for people who "just want to pursue graduate studies." For those who are interested in getting a job in academia and pursuing sociology professionally after graduation, please think twice about terminal degrees and non-ranked schools.
  8. I got an invite two years ago. They invited about 15 - 20 of us and aimed for a cohort for about five or smaller. I am guessing they made about ten offers. I got one myself but really wasnt interested in living in Atlanta and said no. It's a very nice department though and I had a great time visiting. Have fun!
  9. Not true. Most people have a master's or at least a little bit of professional experience. Admission committees tend to be vary of people straight from undergrad. The average age of an entering student is late twenties.
  10. yep.also for the international fellowship.
  11. yep. chances not looking so awesome.. but, would feel silly not to try.
  12. Hey- Anyone applying this year?
  13. They send a letter in the mail to everyone who applied and post the winners names online. Nerve-wracking!
  14. There are people in my cohort who are well over 40. Starting a phd later in life isn't rare.
  15. It seems to me like the funding has been going up in prestigious departments, in both state and private schools, and down everywhere else. California would be an outlier.
  16. That's what I did too.. Come on! I am joking here! Don't you have irrational fears like that? Such as that your transcript got dropped under someone's desk and never made it's way to your file?? 8 more days!
  17. no- the status pertains only to their receipt of recommendations. if you take a look at the status page, you will notice that they say "we are unable to confirm status of supporting documents" .. that's why i am being irrational. we will never know whether we got rejected because a piece of our app was missing or because we didn't make it.
  18. I've convinced myself that they haven't received one of my transcripts, and I will never know. Completely irrational. I wish they had an online checklist!
  19. I did too. Don't see it as likely at all because my profile isn't nearly as good as the past winners. How do they notify the winners? Do finalists get interviewed?

Yes. You can typically sign a lease electronically or via mail/fax.

You will be able to find something in August, you just won't have a great selection. The current grad students might also know of places and rooms. I had a friend who lives in town go and take a look at a couple of places for me that I found over the internet. She took pictures for me and then I signed the lease without ever having seen the place myself. Ypsi is a different story. Commuting isn't too bad and it is quite a bit cheaper. I am actually thinking about buying a house there. It turns out that buying a house in Ypsi is cheaper than paying rent for the duration of my phd program in Ann Arbor.

Ann Arbor is a college town. The best time to look for apartments was in February. My landlord contacted me about extending my lease for next year (Fall 2011) already in November 2010. I had only been living in my apartment for two months at that point! The housing market for students sucks. I was in your shoes last year and signed a lease for a place in April. I found a nice and reasonably priced one bedroom, but it is about twenty-five minutes walking distance from my department. Leases usually start in mid to late August.
