I would love to be worried about that right now

I don't think it matters at all. You don't really have to introduce yourself and you will be speaking with a secretary. Just say you are a prospective applicant who would like to find out when they are releasing decisions. They have no reason to secretive about it. I haven't called any departments personally, but wouldn't hesitate if I had a question. You really are the paying customer here.

Author of a book? Are you kidding? What book?

I just heard that Madison is releasing decisions within the next two weeks. ugh.

They could be meeting today..

Medical soc & science and technology.. Yourself?

oops. I apologize for my excessive online celebrations.. You can go all out when you get a big YES from Texas and I will be hiding in some corner:)

I forced myself into not deciding what my top choice is. I would pretty much love to go anywhere I applied. I heard great things about Austin, of course. My current interests are slightly different from what's being done in the department right now, but with the amazing resources there you can be quite experimental, I think.

We could know something this week.. Unimaginable. I am getting increasingly anxious. Texas was my worst application because the deadline was just too early for me. I wasn't ready yet. I had spelling issues on the first two pages of my writing sample. Ugh. I need that rejection out of the way.

Thanks guys. I think the season for sociology has now started! Paradoxically, I am now stressing out even more now. I found out they invited 14 people. Last year they accepted five. (Well, I am not really sure of that. Somebody said that last year here.) It's better than four out of who-knows-how-many, but still a slim chance. The visit is scheduled for 4th - 7th. All I want is ONE offer. Pretty please..

My undergrad advisor.

As far as I know, most departments don't interview. There surely is a thread devoted to this topic.

Wow! That's so exciting! Living through Chicago winter has convinced me that I need to move south. Austin is rising higher and higher up my list..

INTERVIEW INVITE TO EMORY!
-
I called the secretary this morning because I wanted to be a 1000% sure. She said that I should go by whatever confirmation regarding rec letters I got from Embark. The reason why I couldn't log in the wolverine access page was more interesting. Turns out when I did a summer internship at ISR couple of summers ago they created an employee ID for me. Hence, I had to log it as an employee and not a prospective student. I am much less worried about it now.

For anyone waiting to hear from UPenn- I spoke with the secretary today. She said they received about 250 apps this year and will begin their evaluation at the end of January.

Mental note to self: Do not read this thread unless you want to dive even deeper into the ocean of insecurity.

So far, I have no regrets. I researched the heck out off all the schools I applied to and I am confident they are all great matches to my interest. I have very low chances of being accepted, but I would hate myself if I didn't try to reach for the stars. Another reason why I didn't apply to any safeties is because I love my job. It's within the field and I don't mind staying.
-
I did the same thing. Yes, I am bit ashamed of it. It's useful when people ask me again when I am going to hear from schools - I have an answer ready.

Hi All- In my desperate attempt to procrastinate more effectively, I have decided to start this thread. Very soon we will all have lots of news to post here, RIGHT?! (Breathing heavily.) Thereby I establish our very own sociological corner of joy.

I know that UNC and Emory tend to do interview. In person interviews, that is. I think Captiv8ted would be the right person to give you more info.
-
Maya, I don't have any info for you. I was just wondering if you had any trouble logging in Wolverine. I have not been able to check my status at all. Every time I try I get this message: Please use your Uniqname and Kerberos password to log in to New and Prospective Student Business. If you do not know your Uniqname or Kerberos password call (734) 764-HELP [764-4357] and select the option to reset your UMICH Kerberos password; you'll be connected to person who will verify your identity. Did this happen to you? Did you have to call them to set up an account? Thanks.

Done with applications yet? Or almost done?
JohnBom replied to coffeeandtoast's topic in Sociology Forum
I sent my last packet early last week. There were 10 of them in total. I think my applications went pretty much down hill after the 15th deadline. I couldn't revise the SOP any more and so I am afraid that they will be able to tell how tired I was. I don't think I showed my best work in the applications. Close to it, yes, but not quite. I am a bit disappointed with myself. Now I just want to get over with the replies, so that i can start planning my life beyond February. -
I sent them an email few weeks ago asking when the committee would be meeting. The secretary responded that most likely some time in January. No reason for panic yet.

Hard to say. I know at least three couples that met and got married during grad school. On the flip side, I know a couple that got divorced during grad school.
