midnight
I'm strongly considering applying to CU-Boulder's Linguistics MA with a TESOL specialization. If admitted to the program, my ultimate goal would be to teach adults English; I'm not aiming for a PhD or a career involving in-depth linguistics work or research. My current GRE scores are 150q/164v (I'm still waiting on AWA but scored 5.0 on my first GRE attempt). I have a BA in English, a 3.93 GPA, and some previous work tutoring ESOL adults as well as experience tutoring children in English language arts. I'm proficient in French and conversational in Spanish with hopes of becoming proficient over the next year through an enrichment class at a local university and lots of self-practice. Anyway, do you think my quant score will be a major hindrance (or a hindrance at all)? FWIW, I'm fine with math in a classroom setting and always had A's and B's throughout high school and college math. Thanks for any advice or info on GRE scores in admissions or Boulder's program. I truly appreciate it!
funchaku
I wouldn't worry too much about it. My guess would be that the low GRE score could be offset by other, more important parts of the application, like your SOP, LORs, and writing sample. phonology_rocks
This could have changed, but I am pretty sure Boulders program does not fund MA students....so that is something to consider.....I got in a year ago but without funding, and I was told I could try for an assistantship in my second lanuage, but that they 'typically don't fund MA students'. There program is great, and that was one person telling me they don't fund MA students, maybe that was a poliet way of telling me I didn't get any funding, or maybe its changed, I just figured i'd mention it...... mambeu
Arezoo
I'm also really interested in CU-boulder's program because it mainly is a major center of interdisciplinary research in cognitive-functional linguistics which is what i'm really interested in. Moreover, one can choose to specialize in many different areas and that's a plus. I also sent an e-mail to them regarding the availability of funding to international students and they told me it's not possible. Does anyone know whether it is possible to get some kinda assistantship after the second semester? my native language is Persian and i wonder if there is any kinda support for native speakers of certain languages. Phonolog
Depends on the fit really. I was accepted to top programs phd with a 153 quant, 3.2 gpa, and 6 F's; also a high school dropout. antecedent and Arezoo
KWIKKI
I was admitted by Boulder MA TESL program two years ago. They don't fund MA students. Now I'm studying at NAU, MA TESL program. They offered me full funding. It's a good program and they don't require GRE scoes. Arezoo
gradcaffeine
I'm currently attending CU (PhD Student here). CU Boulder does NOT fund MA students. Having said that, some MA students end up getting RA positions in the second year, and sometimes TA positions. These appointments will cover part of your tuition, but not all of it. Also, if you are interested in the ESL track you might want to contact Mia Ruzic. Decent GRE's and TOEFL scores will be enough for the MA program.
