How soon can you ask about your paper? mine has been 'under review'

I sent my paper to JLT (journal of literary theory) and got an email saying it was 'under review' (dated nov 6 2012). I don't know their time frame for reviewing works, but when do you think it's ok to ask them about the status of the paper?

In my field, I probably wouldn't say anything for about 3 mos... I know some of the humanities fields are longer, up to 6 mos-1 year, from what I've heard.

I work for Social Politics and can only say that in my field(s) then 2-3 months is all good. 1 year - no no..

In my field - Good: 2-3 months. Normal: 3-6 months. Happens more often than should but is not considered ideal: 6-12 months.

I would say the earliest you would to contact somebody would be about four months after you submit the paper, but you should really probably wait six months.
