I sent my paper to JLT (journal of literary theory) and got an email saying it was 'under review' (dated nov 6 2012). I don't know their time frame for reviewing works, but when do you think it's ok to ask them about the status of the paper?

In my field, I probably wouldn't say anything for about 3 mos... I know some of the humanities fields are longer, up to 6 mos-1 year, from what I've heard.

thanks for the help :) anyone in the humanities, particularly english, willing to chip in? the estimate is the same?

I work for Social Politics and can only say that in my field(s) then 2-3 months is all good. 1 year - no no..

Oh gosh, I've been sitting on a review of my own since November 6. I hope the authors aren't asking about it yet ;)

I would say the earliest you would to contact somebody would be about four months after you submit the paper, but you should really probably wait six months.
