my dear goodness, I just googled myself -- all the funeral announcements of all my relatives are there.  It's a sad, sad, story.  I make all my profiles unsearchable, because I'm weird like that, but man -- all the online funeral announcements listing me as a survivor are just .... sad.   I did not even talk about all that because I figured it wouldn't be appropriate to (can you imagine?) but I guess if they google me, they'll see it now.

Woah, none of that had entered my mind.   Maybe I'll go make my linked in profile public and my academia account public just so they have something else to look at!!!  GOODness.  Not trying to be a debbie downer ha, I'm just sorta in shock.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry right now. I just googled my name and 4 things came up.

1)My old myspace

2)A guy who shares my name in a gay sailor outfit

3)Aforementioned guys twitter

4)An old high school wrestling article about me..

Hopefully if I'm googled they'll be able to tell who is who.

Hahaha! I apparently share my exact (uncommon) name with a very busty lingerie model. I really hope these schools aren't googling me and thinking I've paid my way through school by flashing cleavage...

And Miskina: my LinkedIn profile was viewed by someone at a school where I was accepted, so I think it's a good sign!

haha! i've been thinking of doing this myself.  Anyone else?  Is it worth the cost?  And, how elaborate are your LinkedIn profiles?  I have only listed my professional titles & schools attended, but I see some people include courses taken, etc.

Re:  academia.edu --  does this mean people (that I've dated or have considered dating) could potentially see when I've [hypothetically] google-stalked them??

lmao

Something weird happened to me a few days ago, the DGS of one of the programs I applied to added me to their "professional network" on LinkedIn. I have received no news of acceptance or rejection from that school so far, but it's so unexpected that I must have been on their list of "people they may know" - since we had exchanged a few emails about the program earlier in the application season -, and the DGS may have added several people by mistake, including me...  Anyhow, even if i'm not offered admission at their school, I accepted their request. We'll see!

The best way to suppress bad stuff is to pump out good links to the information you want known.  Make you linkedin and other profiles public to get them to the top of the search results.  Keep them fresh and very professional.  A separate twitter account, with your name, that you use for professional stuff and another with an alias for the crazy stuff.  At least two facebook accounts, one for show, one for the fun stuff.

I think at some point soon, not having an online persona will be looked at as weird and problematic.

Ugh.  I hope not.  I don't have any of that stuff - by choice - and I really don't want to invest time in cultivating an appealing professional online persona AND a real-life one.

In terms of people checking my online info, I have a website that exhibits my ethnographic photography that I referenced in my application.  I actually set this up before I started thinking about graduate school.  I use google analytics to monitor my site.  Imagine my surprise when several computers for the city of my top choice started accessing my site. It doesn't tell me who, but does show when, which pages were viewed and for how long.  It also doesn't mean that they liked anything that they saw.  But I know somebody over there saw it.
