Guest HEPhD13 Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Congrats to those that got in! As one of the last top 5 schools to send out admission decisions, I'm excited to see if any spots open up at some of the places people have been wait listed!
sshopeful Posted February 22, 2013 Posted February 22, 2013 Congratulations to all those offered a coveted seat at Harvard! Any of us now waiting for Ed.M decisions (post-rejection)? Would you attend if you were to be accepted?
ism Posted March 1, 2013 Posted March 1, 2013 Hello, To those considering the Ed.D- how much of a factor do you think the change over to the Ph.D will be on the value of the (then-defunct) Ed.D? Everyone I've spoken to at HGSE (students/POI) say that it is purely an administrative change, but I can't shake this feeling that in 10,20 years there may be significant career implications to holding an Ed.D even if from HGSE. I am not set on either pursuing academia or non-academia (am open to either) but don't know what the corresponding implications would be. It's slightly more well-known internationally than my other option but that's NOT the case from a research/academia perspective. However, in non-US academia, would for example World Bank or international universities care more for an Ed.D from Harvard versus a Ph.D from another school? If there are any current students who can voice the general sentiment, that'd be great as well! I am considering a variety of factors in my decision and this is one that has me most confused. Thanks!

Just my 2 cents here... my cousin recently earned her EdD from HGSE and when she was looking for jobs, she had to keep explaining to people that Harvard does it different from most people and her EdD was equivalent to a PhD. She even feels like she wasn't fully considered for some positions because the EdD on top of her resume was breezed over when a PhD was required/expected. It is Harvard, but there are some people (I'm not one of them) that value those little 3 letter differently due to not knowing or just bias. I think it is more important that you are comfortable with the work you have achieved and have confidence in your degree than what a potential employer may think (Easier said than done sometimes). Good luck regardless of what you choose!
PhDHigherED Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Hello Ed.D. admits! Unfortunately, I will be unable to attend the open house this week. It just wouldn't work out with my schedule. Hopefully, I will be able to rely on some of you for the highlights . Have any you made decisions yet? If so, would any of be interested in joining a Facebook group to keep in touch before August? I'm especially interested since I will miss out on meeting you at the open house. It seems like you have to have to add someone besides yourself in order to start a group, so PM me your name and I can get that going.
PhDHigherED Posted March 26, 2013 Posted March 26, 2013 I just created the group. You can search HGSE Ed.D. 2013 or use this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/140977039414090/
