DontHate Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 (edited) Anyone else doing this? Any thoughts about it? I just found out my school is going to sponsor me to go this summer. Edited January 11, 2013 by DontHate Two Espressos, isawnewton, DontHate and 2 others 5
bfat Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I would basically gnaw off my own arm to go. Unfortunately, I need to be earning $2700 this summer, not spending it... I think I'll apply and see where I can get with funding. DontHate and Stately Plump 1 1
pim Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 I worked for SCT the past two summers (currently finishing up my undergrad here)...it's a great program obviously full of people doing pretty fascinating things and such. The atmosphere for socializing is nice and the courses don't require a paper or any submitted work so you have time to work on your other projects while you're in Ithaca. There's also endless receptions with endless wine and beer and fancy catered food. The lectures are hit or miss but I've only heard good things about the courses (which unfortunately I didn't get to sit in on). But yeah basically you'll have a lot of time to yourself and probably drink pretty often and go swimming in the gorges. Ithaca is infernally hot in the summer so that tends to happen quite a bit.

That sounds awesome. Now I'm all excited. gilbertrollins, DontHate and bfat 2 1
ghijklmn Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Too bad they closed half the bars in Collegetown!
bluecheese Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Yeah, this program sounds really great. There are always 2-3 people that I would love to take a course with teaching. I usually don't have enough money though. Hopefully there will be some summer funding at whatever PhD program I attend. I want to do this and Naropa (a similar program for creative writers... awesome faculty, week long classes).
DontHate Posted January 11, 2013 Author Posted January 11, 2013 They reduce the tuition by a couple hundred dollars if your school agrees to sponsor you. My school pays the entire tuition for me, plus a bit extra for living expenses I believe. DontHate, gilbertrollins and bfat 2 1
pim Posted January 11, 2013 Posted January 11, 2013 Too bad they closed half the bars in Collegetown! Yeah the closing of Palms was pretty tragic. But my experience with SCTers is that they mainly hang out at Chapter House in CT or Felicia's/Westie downtown...or Stella's I guess but it's always so quiet there in the summers.
Two Espressos Posted January 12, 2013 Posted January 12, 2013 Anyone else doing this? Any thoughts about it? I just found out my school is going to sponsor me to go this summer. Wow, that's awesome. I'm sure you'll have a great time.

DontHate Posted January 14, 2013 Author Posted January 14, 2013 I just found out that if you're fully sponsored, they GUARANTEE your admission to the program. Guys, talk to your schools about sponsoring you! It looks like a good bit of free fun.
Vincenzo Salvatore Posted February 1, 2013 Posted February 1, 2013 I have just applied too. I will start my PhD in September, so I think that SCT would be a perfect preparation for it. Does anybody know how much time takes the review process? When they usually contact you if you are in?
Strong Flat White Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 this looks effing great. how does one get one's school to sponsor one, hypothetically?
Eddie Kant Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 I applied. I was excited before, but now it sounds even better based on what others are saying. Lots folks there addressing posthumanism too, which is something I'm interested in. I think they said notification of admission would be in March.
DontHate Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 Yeah they call it "theory camp" and there's no written work, just reading and talking with smart people.
Troppman Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Birkbeck's program also looks fantastic (and much more in line with my interests)
DontHate Posted February 5, 2013 Author Posted February 5, 2013 Birkbeck's program also looks fantastic (and much more in line with my interests) but that's a much more expensive plane ticket, for only 12 days (for us Americans).
Troppman Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 (edited) Without a doubt /\; just bringing to light an unmentioned opportunity :-) Edited February 5, 2013 by StephanieDelacour

Judth Posted March 12, 2013 Posted March 12, 2013 Hi Guys, Has anybody received any notifications regarding this program?
Vincenzo Salvatore Posted March 15, 2013 Posted March 15, 2013 Hi Guys, Has anybody received any notifications regarding this program? Received. Unluckily, I was not admitted, but perhaps it is better, because next year I will be able to try for the funded application within the Graduate School.
Fishbucket Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 Yes, they sent out acceptance stuff a few days ago. TyroneSlothrop_ 1
