Archphdeurasia Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Hi PhDreams, I am not applying to Anthropology programs, but my girlfriend is, and she applied at UPenn. Since she categorically refuses to visit this forum, she asked me to keep her updated with any relevant news about her schools. So, may I just ask if you had the impression this was an interview scheduled by your POI independently or rather everyone on the shortlist should have been contacted for interviews by now? Thank you for the information, and best, best, best of luck with your applications! Not every school interviews. Those that do will contact by next week I would guess. But its important to remember not everyone gets interviewed that gets in.
PhDreams Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Not every school interviews. Those that do will contact by next week I would guess. But its important to remember not everyone gets interviewed that gets in. I'm not eaxctly sure what this is trying to say, but for UPenn the shortlist has already been made for sociocultural. They said they were interviewing because they were going to meet the adcom this week. I can't imagine why a POI would NOT want to interview you to have more information to advocate on your behalf. It also seemed to be standard practice in that dept. However, this is just sociocultural. Can't say anything else for any other field.
anthropologygeek Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Phd dreams- a lot of schools don't interview
kphd Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Phd dreams- a lot of schools don't interview That is impression I had too. In fact the typical SoP advice says something like.... Since grad schools do not typically interview you must try to reveal your personality and strengths in the SoP...or something along those lines. Several schools have mentioned on their websites that interviews are not a part of the admission process but they may be conducted when need is felt. Moreover, I think interviews have become more common in recent years. Many people who got admitted about 4-5 years ago tell me that they weren't interviewed at all. The few who were interviewed..internationals....said that it was just a 5-10 min call inquiring about other offers and discussing the amount of funding they may be able to provide and if that is would be sufficient etc..and perhaps to check how comfortable they are speaking english I think it will become more common in the coming years...as the good ol profs become more comfortable with Skype..
PhDreams Posted February 2, 2013 Posted February 2, 2013 Phd dreams- a lot of schools don't interview lol i meant..at a school that interviews, why wouldnt your POI choose to get more info about you. My POI explained the process to me at UPenn... I was only talking about UPenn. For instance, at Harvard.. most programs here dont interview at all. anxiousanthro 1

jperry4uall Posted February 4, 2013 Posted February 4, 2013 Has anyone who's applied to NYU for linguistic anthro heard from the department?
mp429 Posted February 5, 2013 Posted February 5, 2013 Hey! the interview calls/emails from NYU Is this only for bio or have they been sent out for socio-cultural too?? I'm for bio, so I'm not sure if the Anthro department as a whole is doing the same thing, but my POI has been in and out of meetings for the past week or two about admissions. It would make the most sense if the entire department had an adcomm, so maybe linguistic/socio HAS met, but they are following a different process with interviews/visits/admissions. Additionally, he stated that there are a lot of people they are interested in (particularly international applicants) that they cannot invite to visit New York due to costs, but that are still actively being considered.
anxiousanthro Posted February 6, 2013 Posted February 6, 2013 what would anyone make of an interview with someone who i did not express interest in working with? could it be they want an objective outsider to assess my application, or that they thought i would be best paired with this prof? any ideas would be appreciated! hope everyone is still staying sane!

Platysaurus Posted February 12, 2013 Posted February 12, 2013 Hey guys, I got my first interview soon for Yale, for those who´ve gone through this with other universities, WashU, Duke, whatever, any tips? Any hard or unexpected questions? I´m just not sure how I can prepare for this.
mp429 Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 (edited) Platysaurus - I had a skype interview & an in-person interview day with NYU. The in-person was not really like an interview but more like them telling me about the program, answering questions, and generally just asking me to explain my background and how I got to the point of applying for a PhD with them (this was from the other faculty, not my POI). With my POI it was more discussing very informal things, however, my skype interview with him was just the general - why a phd? why this program? research interests and how it related to my past experiences. pretty basic questions, I haven't felt very drilled or put on the spot with anything. I don't know if other universities will be the same, but I'm sure you will be fine! Usually if you're going for in-person interviews it can come down to a personality-test to see if you mesh well with your POI and the department. So just relax and be yourself Edited February 13, 2013 by mp429
