Do you guys know any American scholars whose focus is Brazilian art?  I know of Dr. Small at Princeton... any other names?

Thank you!

Edward Sullivan at the IFA, Cécile Fromont at UChicago, and Amy Buono at SMU. None focus exclusively on Brazilian art, but all have worked on it some capacity and would certainly be capable of advising on the topic.

Double check, but I don't think Edward Sullivan is actually at the IFA.  He's at NYU.  There's a separate art history department there, even though the IFA is part of the university.  I'm not sure how much the faculty cross over.

To pipe in with a general suggestion, for those of us studying art in less commonly studied nations/geographic areas the issue can be less about who studies the same area, but someone who is willing to employ his or her particular knowledge to your area of interest. For a pertinent example, I know a grad student at Berkeley working on Brazilian art but studying under two professors who specialize elsewhere.

To add on to what lefilsdhomme said about Berkeley, I believe that Julia Bryan-Wilson has done work on Brazilian art. In addition, all doctoral students in the department at Berkeley are required to have a committee member outside of Art History, so you would be able to work with someone like Natalia Brizuela.

Keep in mind that Irene Small completed her doctorate under David Joselit, who is definitely not a Brazilianist, so if you're working on the 20th century you don't necessarily need to limit yourself solely to Brazilianists.

I would also check out Fabiola López-Durán at Rice.

Professor Lauren Weingarden at Florida State University received a Fulbright last year to perform research on contemporary art in Brazil (focusing on the art park, Inhotim).  She has a great deal of connections there, as well, since she travelled all over the country lecturing at universities.

She can be a total space cadet, though. Some intellectual folks are like that.

I've heard that about her.
