  1. I actually disagree. If you've received multiple acceptances and you KNOW for certain that you won't be accepting the offer at one of them, decline as soon as possible. It's courteous to the department, and it makes room for other students who are still waiting on admissions decisions.
  2. What do you do after you've been accepted? Drink, take a nap, and don't check your email for a week! They'll tell you everything you need to do. Maybe pop an email back thanking the department for your acceptance, and ask them what the funding situation is (if they haven't already told you). Also let them know if you accept or need more time to decide. All in all, just relax! You'll know what to do when the time comes. It'll be pretty straight-forward.
  3. Highland Park is lovely; it's a cute, tight-knit community that is in walking distance to the College Ave campus, and much, MUCH safer than living in New Brunswick. I highly suggest looking at some of the small apartment complexes in the area. Morgan Properties has been really reliable, in my experience.
  4. Haha, naw, just shittin' you ETA: No, but seriously. You ARE the worst.
  5. Also, my signature is a pun, so that's TWO bad puns. Don't sell me short, man.
  6. Oh Loric, why didn't you quit gradcafe like you promised? We were all really excited for a while to not have to deal with your trolling. You ruined Christmas.
  7. Also, Siam Sushi has fantastic sushi rolls (which you wouldn't expect from a place that joins the words "siam' and "sushi" together. But seriously, YUM. Get the "trust me roll", The sushi chef, Krishna, will surprise you with something epic.). Sakura and Jasmine are also incredible, Sakura for the more straight Japanese sushi and nigiri, and Jasmine for the really inventive combinations.
  8. Pho 7 is alright if you're on that side of town, but Far East is a much better Vietnamese restaurant. The only problem is that it's pretty far from campus. Pho 7 has a tendency to to rip you off on vegetables, and the menu is much more limited. It's not bad, though. Better than most college-area food places.
  9. That just means we get to be the young upstarts! I'm really liking this pact.
  10. Okay, so when you present a projected cost to organizations that provide overseas fellowships that are intended to last for less than a year (let's say 2-4 months), is it kosher to ask for money to maintain your rent at home?
  11. I can't wait until I'm famous enough to have a really great unreasonable feud with a well-respected scholar. Norman Bryson, I'm coming for you, old man.
  12. Only study what you absolutely love and are crazy about, because your passion is the only thing that will keep you going mid-dissertation. If you don't want to live, eat, breathe, drink, sleep that period of art, choose the one that you do.
  13. I don't really know the specifics of writing about curating on a CV, but I do know plenty of people who include a lot less significant experiences in theirs than what you've got going on. I say add all of it. Also, people put "current research" on their CV, why would current and guaranteed future exhibitions and gallery work be any different?
  14. I had almost the exact same scores, maybe just a teeny tiny bit higher in math. You're perfectly fine, nothing much would change if you took it again.
  15. I didn't do so many phone calls, more like creepy, fan-girly emails. I'm pretty sure that this was impression I left half of my POIs with:
  16. I believe that Emory has an excellent archival program that is open to both art history graduate students, as well as library science students. Give it a shot!
  17. There are SOME schools I would describe as "safeties", only because they accept almost everyone, but with no funding. So if you have the cash to spend, they will definitely take your money.
  18. You could make an encyclopedia of artists who were assholes to their families- like Gauguin! Isn't Gericault's death mask creepy? Beautiful, but, you know. Creepy. Not something you'd want to find staring back at you from your closet.
  19. Just to kill time, let's talk about some of our favorite eccentrics/assholes/geniuses from art history. Now, I'm not necessarily talking about your favorite artist, because let's be honest: Gainsborough might have been an incredible painter, but he was probably a total snooze-fest at dinner parties. I'm rather fond of murderous Italians; Caravaggio and Bernini had some serious anger-control issues.
