soshy Posted January 22, 2013 Posted January 22, 2013 Like many others I feel I'm getting paranoid lately... seeing two consecutive missed calls with no caller ID right after a meeting immediately reminds me of my PhD applications. What if they are phone interviews? So I wonder if professors would just decide to call of the blue? Or do they always email first?
woosah Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I had a POI call out of the blue earlier this month. I was in my pajamas, eating cereal, watching Grey's Anatomy, no advance warning. I almost choked when she introduced herself...
Minnow Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I had a department head call me last week with no warning. Luckily she left a message! I ended up emailing her back and we've now set up a time to chat in depth.
soshy Posted January 23, 2013 Author Posted January 23, 2013 Thanks for the ...comforting info. Time to freak out
EastCoasting Posted January 23, 2013 Posted January 23, 2013 I also had one surprise call, and thankfully I could honestly say that I couldn't speak at that moment, and to call back in a few hours. I don't love being put on the spot.
psychbabe Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Ok so these surprised phone calls.. Do they normally show a phone number, does it say blocked number or what? Cause I had one yesterday and I don't normally answer them cause they are telemarketers normally and they didn't leave a message? And the numbers that do show tell where they are calling from like city state etc... So should I look for that. I freaking out now!

Her number showed, and she insisted that I save it in case I had questions later on. I saw city/state when she called, just didn't occur to me that it might be someone from a grad program (I have family in that area). Phone interview with a different POI, her number wasn't blocked either but the call was scheduled. Edited January 25, 2013 by woosah

My caller ID showed the full phone number and the name of the University, plus the prof left a message. No need to freak out!
