  1. For what it's worth (probably not much, haha), I had a phone interview in which a prof told me to keep him/her informed of what my other offers are. It clearly wasn't a guarantee that they could match offers, but it certainly seemed to imply that they would try. I haven't been accepted there, though (they won't make decisions until the end of Feb), so I can't tell you if it's worked, unfortunately!
  2. Thanks! My completion date for the master's was 1/31, btw - but again, I applied to the PhD as well and heard back about that one first, and my apps for both were very similar. Also, I applied to the Language & Literacy M.S.Ed, not to Higher Ed. Fingers crossed for you (and everyone else)!
  3. Sadly, my hope for the wait list has been extinguished - I got an official rejection from the PhD program. But, a few days later, I was admitted to one of their Master's program that I had applied to, so that's comforting!
  4. Ah, I see. Thanks for letting me know!
  5. Hi RandiZ, Did your POI contact you first, or did you contact him or her first? Just wondering if I should panic about how no one has reached out to me
  6. Hi Sumac77, I applied to Rutgers for a PhD and I haven't heard a thing! Here's hoping we both hear something soon!
  7. Ugh, I'm in the same boat, I think: according to the results search, some of my schools won't let me know until March. Waiting is the worst!
  8. You don't have to worry about that - it's an error. From their website: "When you log out of checking the status of the application on the log out page there is another line saying application 2 in progress. Is that indicating that my application is being looked at by someone in the admissions office? Application 2 was a system we previously used to allow you to apply to a 2nd program (like the applicant in our first question). However, that system is no longer in use, and you are most likely seeing that message in error (just focus on the . Our office will send you an email to update you on the status of your application every time materials are received for you. Once you receive the email that says your application is complete, you know that it has then been sent to the faculty from the program to which you applied for an admissions decision."
  9. Hi EdNerd2013, When you look at your application, you can click on "Check Your Application" (on the bottom left hand side of the screen), and then it will tell you your application status. Also, I should have been clearer in my previous post: I was using "submitted" and "applied" synonymously. I was just trying to explain that I had not been admitted nor rejected. Also, I looked through the archives of their admissions blog and it does seem like they had a waiting list last year. Not sure if they have the same practices this cycle, but it's a bit reassuring! You can see the post here: http://penngseadmissions.blogspot.com/2012/02/this-weeks-reader-q.html . And the pertinent info: "Yes, Penn GSE does keep a wait list for doctoral applicants (Ph.D. and traditional and executive Ed.D.). We do not keep a wait list for master's applicants." So, with any luck, a few of us are on the waiting list!
  10. Hi Bertiek, I applied to the PhD program as well and have received neither! I assume that I'm on some kind of wait list, especially because my status is still "applied" on their website. On their admissions blog, they wrote: "If you did not receive an invitation to the PhD weekend, it is most likely that you will not be accepted into the program for this year. We will however post a final faculty decision for your application, and all other PhD applicants who were not invited to the weekend, in the coming weeks." I take this to mean that there is some kind of waiting list, although I am not sure, since it could also be that people are finding out in batches (maybe there is some kind of tech issue with notifying everyone at the same time? Unsure.). Anyway, I'll take the waiting list over a rejection any day, so fingers crossed! Good luck to you!
  11. I'm not sure if this is the "right" thing to do, but I'm planning on asking questions about student life and the surrounding area - what cultural events happen in town, what the restaurant/grocery store situation is like (food prices in my current town are pretty cheap!), the best places to live off-campus, that kind of thing. Again, I don't know if that's what one is supposed to do, but that's what I'd like to ask!
  12. My caller ID showed the full phone number and the name of the University, plus the prof left a message. No need to freak out!
  13. Thanks, wjdavis! I have a master's, too, though mine is in Linguistics, so I would definitely prefer a doctoral program! Amazingly, I have a phone interview scheduled for Syracuse, so hopefully that will work out! Best of luck to you!
  14. I agree with ArtHistoryandMuseum - the phone can be awkward! I've had conversations with POIs both over the phone and with Skype and I prefer Skype. The best things about Skype are that you can see when the POI is taking notes (which makes it much easier to know when to pause) and what his/her reaction is to what you've said. Also, my kitty came to visit during our Skype chat and it gave us something to joke about and eased the tension. Good luck with your interview, whichever you choose!
  15. I've applied for Literacy/Reading programs at: UPenn (no invitation, so I know that's a rejection) Rutgers - PhD in Literacy Education Syracuse - PhD in Literacy Education NYU - PhD in Teaching and Learning UMass Amherst - EdD in Language, Literacy, and Culture
