  1. I use the plain old (free) Adobe Reader app on my iPad. I tried to make the switch to Goodreader not too long ago because I had seen good reviews and wanted seamless Dropbox integration, but it lagged too much when I tried to scroll through pages. Once it froze on me mid-article before I could save/sync my annotations. Over an hour's worth of reading notes, gone! (Still not over it.) Since then, I've figured out how to upload PDF files from the Adobe Reader app back to Dropbox after I've taken notes: Just select "Dropbox" under the "Open In..." option in Adobe Reader, and select the desired location in Dropbox. If the file already exists there, you have the option to save a copy or overwrite the existing file with the most up-to-date version. I keep all of my articles in a single folder in my Dropbox that automatically syncs with Mendeley whenever I open it. I still like taking class notes by hand, it helps keep me focused. I might look into getting a Livescribe pen next year.
  2. I've officially got one semester under my belt, and I'm trying to do a better job of keeping my reading organized moving forward. I plan on transitioning to this "system" over winter break: http://teacherweb.ggc.edu/cte/blogs/?p=63 For those of you who do something similar, do you think it's important to maintain a clean copy of all your PDFs, without any highlights or annotations?
  3. 2 weeks in... the imposter syndrome is real :-/
  4. I recently graduated with my BA, and while I'm thoroughly enjoying letting my brain rest for now, I know I'll want to feel like I'm doing more to prepare in the weeks just before my program starts. Before i left my old campus, I had one of the grad students in my new lab email me the syllabi from the required 1st semester courses, and have pulled several of those articles to start reading this summer. I will likely need to re-read them when they're actually assigned, but I wanted to start getting a feel for the readings and practice using Mendeley since I've never used a citation manager to organize and annotate before. Also, I'm familiar with my advisor's current work, and I'll probably search to see what her students are writing as well. That, at least, is the plan...
  5. I'm a little late, but Vanderbilt has a specialization in Learning Sciences and Learning Environment Design that might suit your interests: http://peabody.vanderbilt.edu/departments/tl/graduate_programs/doctoral_programs/learning_sciences_and_learning_environment_design.php
  6. Anyone know of specific complexes that are on a bus line? Looks like I'll be car-less for about a month or so after I move...
  7. I like the Firefox add-on call Leechblocker. You can create different lists of websites and set a time limit for how long you can be on them per day, week, etc. I also have it set up so that, while my time-wasting sites are being blocked, I can't adjust the settings. I only allow myself one hour per day during the week, which is long enough for me to check Facebook or my favorite boards a couple times a day without wasting a substantial amount of time. If you have a friend you'd trust with your login information, you could have them change your password so that you don't have access to social media sites for a while. I know people who use this buddy system during finals because it's the only way they can get everything done. The TV has presented another problem for me. I just had to hand my power cord over to my roommate until after finals :-/
  8. I have an HP printer/scanner/copier that's served me well through the end of high school and all of undergrad. I'll definitely be keeping it in my home office, but depending on how printing is set up in my future lab, I'm not sure how much I'll use it. If it broke, I probably wouldn't replace it. Other essentials for me: -Large dry erase calendar -Bookstand (to keep hard copy texts upright and visible while I'm typing) Any suggestions on where to buy a 2nd monitor? I hate working on small screens, but I don't want a bulky laptop...would it be excessive to have one monitor for home and one for the office?

I received my funding letter March 12th from the Phd program.
  10. If your school is on this list http://www.cgsnet.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/CGS_Resolution.pdf, they can't compel you to make a decision before April 15th. If they are on the list and still pressuring you to commit early, you are within your rights to accept and back out before April 15th if you receive a better offer. If they are not on the list, I think you should express your continued interest in the program, but insist that they give you enough time to make an informed decision. Who have you communicated with? Perhaps there is someone above them you could talk to? I'm actually really annoyed for you, it is unreasonable of them to expect you to make a binding decision of this magnitude without all of the relevant information.
  11. I was glad to know early on that I would likely be admitted, but I couldn't get excited or tell everyone just in case the decision fell through. It's a different kind of waiting. At least you got a time frame, I was just told I would be hearing from the Graduate School "soon". My idea of soon is 3-4 days, theirs was more like 29
  12. As for asking your POI, I wouldn't do it (would you call a potential employer before a big interview to ask what to wear?). If you are in contact with a current student in the program, you could shoot them an email to get advice. I don't know much about variations of interview attire for males, but I like ak48's suggestion.
